Book Description

Centennial Edition September 2000
Over 70 brilliant artworks by the legendary William Spratling—adventurer, celebrity, and world-renowned silver artisan—are presented in this stunning centennial edition of the acclaimed Spratling Silver. An eagle's profile carved gracefully into the rosewood handle of a 1930s pitcher; the subtle essence of a sea animal in a classic brooch: the exquisite detail and splendor of such unique creations are showcased here in all their lustrous glory. Included are commentaries from Spratling's friends and contemporaries (the likes of Georgia O'Keeffe, who was photographed wearing one of his pins on her austere black dress), which paint an intimate portrait of the man instrumental in reviving Mexico's silver industry in the late 1920s. With 26 additional photographs, an expanded text, and a new hallmarks section with information for collectors, Spratling Silver is the only comprehensive volume to portray the full scope and beauty of William Spratling's treasures.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This edition of the collector-author's 1990 work, which originated as a display catalog in Cederwall's art gallery, commemorates the centennial of William Spratling's birth. An expanded text, an additional 23 photographs, and a biographical essay by Barnaby Conrad, a friend and contemporary of the noted silver designer combined with the origianl material to provide a brief introduction to Spratling and his work. Dramatic black-and-white photographs of silver artworks, each accompanied by dimensions and hallmarks, underscore the "intelligent, simple, restrained" yet appealing style that has made his designs so collectible. This excellent depiction of Spratling's artistic outputDnecessarily limited in scopeDis the perfect complement to Joan Mark's The Silver Gringo (LJ 2/1/00), which centers on his silver business, and Taylor Littleton's The Color of Silver (LJ 4/15/00), which focuses on his life. The coffee-table format and oversize print make this ideal for public libraries.DRex E. Klett, Mitchell Community Coll., Statesville, NC

This review is from: Spratling Silver (Hardcover)
The book, Spratling Silver, was very limited in its review of Spratling jewelry. I would have liked to had this information ahead of time. I wanted a large collection of pictures of Spratling works and this was a limited selection. I also wanted a price guide. This book is a "coffee table" book. This book was ordered from Amazon.com.
