Make your own HVLP turbine!,
By
This review is from: Spray Finishing and Other Techniques (Paperback)
This book has some good info including a few handy charts. What I like the most is the chapter on making your own HVLP turbine. The chapter on setting up a low cost spray booth is good.21 chapters in all, but I could have done without the aerosol finishes section, but others may love it. Good book for 12.00.

A great collection of all the relevant details I missed in numerous magazines. Organised and indexed better than I could have and well worth the purchase.

Good Practical Advice,
By
This review is from: Spray Finishing and Other Techniques (Paperback)
If you plan to do a lot of spray finishing and whether you are starting out or are experienced - this Author has something of value for you. The tips and experience in here have kept me out of serious trouble. People actually pay us to make/finish things for them. They like our finishes. This book can give you what you need to get started making money and developing a reputation for doing the "hard stuff". I learned about spraying dyes from this man. I have learned to love dyes more than oil-based stains. Good Book.

Recapped articles,

This review is from: Spray Finishing and Other Techniques (Paperback)
This is a compilation of articles written in their magazine. It is not a comprehensive book on how to spray finish. I recently bought an HVLP sprayer and wanted more of a tutorial consistent how to steps. This did not meet my needs and will be purchasing another option. There are some very good articles and some great woodworkers that have ocntributed. So I will keep the book.I am a pretty advanced woodworker and read a lot about the craft and have always finished the old fashioned way but got a chance to get a really nice HVLP for next to nothing at auction. If you are competent with an HVLP and are looking for tips and advanced techniques this might fit your needs.

Some good tips, but not a thorough how-to,

I agree with the other reviewer stating this is merely a compilation of articles from different authors thrown into a book. Although the book does contain some good "tips" on spraying, it's hardly a soup to nuts book on spraying projects. What I was mostly looking for was setting up the best HVLP system I could. The chapter entitled "Which Spray System Is Right For You?" pretty much concluded the best HVLP set-up for the finest spray is a conversion-air. However, the article does not go into any detail on how to set that up. That chapter describes the turbine hvlp as "coarse and splotchy." The next chapter is then devoted to, you guessed it, the turbine air hvlp system! There is no further detail about the set up of a conversion air system. If you already have a spray system you are happy with, there are several good articles in this book about improving technique. Do what I did though, check out the book for free from your local library and make copies of the articles you find useful.

Although I grew up in a family filled with craftsmen, I still have questions on the best techniques when it comes to wood finishing. This book is filled with great articles that cover a wide array of techniques in a very clear way. I needed something that would help me narrow down a technique for doing some finishing for some mass furniture production coming up and this book covered all bases for me.

I got this book and went through it.It's published in 2006 - relatively current. They cover the new technologies and the new products. They also show you how to save a buck or two. It's inventive. Using automotive materials to finish wood? yep. Build a small inexpensive paint-booth? yep. Build your own turbine paint spray system? yep. Although I do have a turbine. Cover all the thinning and cutting products, when to use them? yep. I should give this book a terrible review - so nobody around where I live wants to buy it. I have experience with automotive and wood finishing. I learned a lot. You will too. 5 star.

Save yourself some frustration, and do some reading prior to attempting serious spray painting. There are only a few good books, and this is one of them. If you know the basics, you may want to check out J. Jewitt's FINISHING.
