Book Description

July 2000
Teenager's Journey of Suspense, Romance, & Terror In Overcoming Sexual Abuse, inspired by actual events. How does a teenage girl feel, act, cope, and respond to friends and dating situations when at home in her "normal" and religious family, she is being stalked and sexually abused by her father. Based on the true life emotional experiences of Rebecca Engle Smith, this narrative-driven, fact-based story is designed to be a compelling read for teenagers and a teaching tool for therapists, school counselors, religious leaders, teachers, teenagers, and for everyone whose lives are touched by a loved one being abused.

The journey of Cassi, a fictional high school junior, is told in an upbeat style as she tries to cope with her debilitating fears by joining the swim team. It's packed with suspense, romance, and terror. Follow Cassi as she works through each obstacle, learning to face her life, her friends, her parents, the world of dating, her father's arrest and conviction, and finally–therapy and the power of healing.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The first book I read on healing was nonfiction and full of facts that smacked me hard with reality. I read one paragraph, burst into tears, and had to close the book. It stayed closed for about six months while I "digested" that one paragraph. It took me a year and a half to finish the book.

So what makes this book so different? I'm certainly not a counselor, psychologist, or an expert in any way. The only "training" I have had is what life has dealt to me.

But I tried to put an adult perspective into what I felt as a child. I tried to make the reading less threatening through fiction, and I tried to spark natural healing through the use of metaphors.

I hope that by doing this, the book will allow the reader's conscious mind to step back, and take a breather before continuing; while the reader's subconscious mind deciphers and internalizes the information at a level where healing can begin.

From the Inside Flap

Dedicated to "those who long for freedom," this fact based fictional teen novel is an upbeat story about a high school junior, Cassi, who struggles with incest, and how she tries to hide her fears by joining the swim team. It's packed with suspense, romance, and terror. Follow Cassi as she learns to face her fears. And discover the power of healing as she works through each obstacle! Based on the true life emotional experiences of Rebecca Engle Smith, this book was designed to be a friendly teaching tool for those who suffer, and will surely aid in helping their loved ones to understand the horror that they've been through and what they need to heal.

This review is from: Spread Your Wings & Fly: Teenager's Journey of Suspense, Romance, & Terror (in Overcoming Sexual Abuse) (Paperback)
When I fist began reading this book it seemed to lack alot of the emotion that I feel a novel should have. As I finished the book I understood why it felt that way to me and can say that this book is well written and must have been very theraputic for the author to connect in this way with the world. Stick it out and learn something you never knew or find hope in this tale.
