Book Description

January 22, 2009 0073385867 978-0073385860 1st
This practical text is a perfect fit for introductory engineering courses by successfully combining an introduction to Excel fundamentals with a clear presentation on how Excel can be used to solve common engineering problems. Updated to ensure compatibility with Excel 2007, Spreadsheet Tools for Engineers Using Excel 2007 provides beginning engineering students with a strong foundation in problem solving using Excel as the modern day equivalent of the slide rule.

As part of McGraw-Hill's BEST series for freshman engineering curricula, this text is particularly geared toward introductory students. The author provides plenty of background information on technical terms, and provides numerous examples illustrating both traditional and spreadsheet solutions for a variety of engineering problems. The first three chapters introduce the basics of problem solving and Excel fundamentals. Beyond that, the chapters are largely independent of one another. Topics covered include graphing data, unit conversions, data analysis, interpolation and curve fitting, solving equations, evaluating integrals, creating macros, and comparing economic alternatives.

1.0 out of 5 stars Why the hell did I need to buy this? September 19, 2011
By NP
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
All of the information in this book can be obtained by a few Google searches. The ONLY reason I bought this book was because I needed to do one of the problems in the book. This book isn't even useful anymore; there's a new version of Office out. I'm sure the only reason I had to do that one problem was because the publishers "donated" to the University.

5.0 out of 5 stars Needed for Computing April 19, 2014

It's the first textbook I've ever rented and I'm happy I chose Amazon. The book itself isn't fantastic but I needed it for homework problems. The book arrived in good condition and didn't have any big marks or highlighting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very concise April 12, 2014
Format:Paperback
The book is okay, but the problem I have with it is that it just blabs on and on and on about concepts when really it should take much less to explain. Concepts that could be explain in 3-4 pages are explained in around 10-12 pages. This book is around 500 pages, but I feel as if it could have been written equally well in maybe as little as 100-200 pages.

Pros: Does decent job explaining the program and its features
Cons: Not concise

4.0 out of 5 stars Spreadsheet Tools for Engineers Using Excel 2007 March 2, 2014

I like this book but needs to be updated to match the current 2010 Excel version. The way it is written is not totally clear to understand.

3.0 out of 5 stars UVa Intro to engineer Lab February 24, 2014
By Carl W.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Needed this book for the lab in the title. Used a few pages, and it contained some of the assignments. If you're reading this, and are taking that class, you can buy it if you like. Or you can find a friend that has it and borrow it for a few minutes every week to write down the problems you have to do and save some coin.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible January 11, 2014
By Andrew
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Don't waste your money on this product.

Awfully written and horrifically organized examples and explanations.

Furthermore, it's completely unnecessary; most of the information can be garnered by simply browsing the internet (which consumes considerably less time than trying to decipher this book)
