Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The Sprig Discover Rig comes with world-famous adventure guide Cap Faraday, who has invited you to be the driver on his trek through the African Serengeti. Keep your ears open and your eyes on the road because on Secret Safari, there's a silly animal around every bend and you're in for a wild ride. Mom never needs to buy or install batteries as the internal generator that powers the lights and sounds is triggered when the Discover Rig is rolled during play. You can pick from three exciting play modes: Search with lights only, no sound; Rally - engine rumble sound and lights; or adventure - lights and themed adventure sounds. The Discover Rig includes Adventure Guide Cap Faraday and brings a light-up function when placed in any of the sidekick vehicles and full light-up and sound adventure when driving the discover rig. Place one of the other Sprig Adventure Series Guides in The Discover Rig and go on an entirely new adventure. The Discover Rig and Adventure Guide are made in Canada from an bio-composite called Sprig wood using recycled plastic and reclaimed wood. Enjoy fun and interactive electronic play in a push around vehicle that never needs batteries.

Product Description

This sturdy, battery-free vehicle is powered by a kid's own kinetic energy. When a child rolls the toy forward, it triggers a generator that powers both the light and sound for the USB-powered characters. How green can you go! Sprig Toys, Inc. Ages: 3+

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
The Discover Rig is a very sturdy and chunky toy. It wins top marks for construction. The plastic / sawdust material is pleasant to touch and smell, and the big rubber wheels are great. The toy functions by pushing the rig to light a "guide" character who narrates a story for as long as you push the rig.

What lets it down for me is that that the rig's speaker is so muffled that it is almost impossible to hear what the guide is saying. If the speaker were clearer I would think better of the toy than I do. It might be easier to hear on solid floors than it does on timber. I wouldn't recommend buying extra guides until you know if you can even hear them! If you purchase more than one guide and sit them in the passenger seat they also tend to come loose and rattle around.

I also found that the toy requires constant pushing to hear the story so you really need a very large space or turning area. If the rig stops even for a split second, the guide restarts from the beginning which is annoying.

Overall its a great concept but I think the implementation needs improvement.

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
My 3 year old son recently received a sprig discover rig for his birthday. It quickly became his favorite toy to take on walks. He calls it his "jumbo" car!! (the driver of the car talks and says "jambo" which is"Hello" in swahili, but it sounds like "jumbo") It's fun to take on walks because the more you push it, the more sounds and music you hear.(elephants, monkeys, etc) Unfortunately, the music/lights stopped working after about a month. My husband took the car apart to see if he could fix it,but the links that turn the generator inside the car were broken. My son was heartbroken that his jumbo didn't work anymore. Since it was a gift from relatives in another state, I didn't have a receipt for it. I emailed the sprig company and quickly received a reply from one of the co-founders of the company. I explained my situation and he offered to send out a new chassis for the car. (for free)I received the new chassis today and the car is fixed again. I was very impressed with the level of customer service I received!!

My son LOVES his rig! October 2, 2008
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
My son is a little young (2 years), but the discovery rig is one of his favorite toys. He will push it all over the house and yard. It can easily go over the rocks and stairs, but there's not a scratch on my hardwood floors. He loves the music and will often stop pushing to do a little dance and then he's back on his adventure. I love that I don't have worry about how it's made. It may be part plastic, but it smells like wood which gets a great reaction from all my adult friends.
