From the Manufacturer

Inspired by our collective desire to keep kids active and the planet healthy, Team Sprig is dedicated to infusing creativity, smart design, quality manufacturing, product satisfaction and responsible business practices into a superior line of fun, kid-powered toys. We help make the world a better place and we get kids off the couch. Pretty cool, huh? Once upon a time, there were three talented toy designers who were taking the industry by storm. Their award-winning toys were selling like hotcakes. They were happy and successful. Then one day the designers visited the factories that turned their computer renderings into real toys. They eagerly watched the assembly line with anticipation, and quickly realized the harmful impact their toy production had on the nearby air, soil, water, plants and people. They were devastated. They went back to the drawing board, only to face another disturbing toy trend that threatened to control their designs. Passive “watch-me” electronic toys were gaining popularity, encouraging otherwise healthy kids to become more inactive. The designers refused to be part of the problem, so they joined forces to become the solution. Our brave, young designers made a pact. They vowed then and there to make the best toys the right way. They were on a mission to keep kids active and the planet healthy, and the quest became personal when they started to have children of their own. In 2007, they formed Sprig Toys, Inc., turning their vision into reality. The designers packed their families and moved from opposite coasts to reunite the threesome in the heart of the Rocky Mountain west. It was in Fort Collins, Colorado, where Team Sprig created their top-secret, high-tech toy laboratory – and where they designed an exciting line of battery-free, paint-free, kid-powered toys sure to dazzle the most discriminating preschooler.

Perhaps I will try to smear caulking into the space between layers to seal them together.

I couldn't wait to give this boat to my 16 months old, because this boat looked so nice and fun to play with. Love the way it's made and that it is from recycled materials. Unfortunately because the bottom part is made of two different pieces (the hull in blue and the "floor boards" in brown) it has a gap in between that allowes water to seep in very quickly. If you gently place it on the water surface it is ok, but if you have an excited little guy push it into the water even a little bit, it takes on water very quickly and sinks to the bottom. First thing my son does when he gets in the tup is push down on it, and once it sinks he is not interested in the boat anymore. Maybe it is due to his age, perhaps he will be able to play with it better when he gets older, but I still think that for a boat made for small children it really shouldn't sink, especially not at that price! Another concern then is that mold can build up in between the layers which usually is the ultimate reason for me not to buy certain bath toys. Perhaps I will try to smear caulking into the space between layers to seal them together. Had I known this beforehand I wouldn't have purchased this product.

We have purchased many toys from Sprig including the Recycle Truck, Dump Truck, Front End Loader, Excavator, Discover Rig, Dino Adventure Rig, Scuba Search, and Dolphin Explorer Boat.

We have been happy with everything except the Dolphin Explorer Boat set. The Explorer Boat piece fills with water and sinks. When this fills up with water, you have to tip it to the side and let it drain out. There is no way to open it to really clean it out, so you end up with dirty bath water inside the toy. We were worried that mold could form inside the toy and we did not feel that this was very sanitary.

When I called the company's customer support line, I was told that this is normal, they suggested putting it in the dishwasher or give the toy a bleach bath if I wanted to clean/sanitize it. The customer service representative told me that I could return it to the within 30 days for reimbursement as it has a 30 day warranty. Unfortunately, we purchased the toy months ago for our son and only recently gave it to him.

I have tried to contact customer service again to see if they could give me a credit towards something else, but I have not heard back from them yet.

Unless you feel like giving a history lesson on the Titanic, don't bother with this boat. I've never even reviewed an item on Amazon but felt compelled to after wasting money on this piece of junk. First of all, I foolishly thought I was buying a recycled, American made toy (as advertised on the box) but on the bottom of the toy, they have the nerve to say, "Created in Colorado (or somewhere), Made in China." The boat itself fills with water sinks very easily and after a few uses, water is permanently stuck in the "bilge" and cannot come out. The boat then doesn't float anymore, rendering it useless.

I thought this boat would be great. I loved the materials it was made out of, and the theme of the toy itself. Unfortunately, the little boat and dolphins sank almost as soon as they entered the water, and the big boat followed soon after. The big boat also tore very easily after a couple of play sessions (my son was nine months old at the time, so I don't think he was being too rough with the it). Maybe it was just our model, but it was definitely not worth the $20 spent on it.

I thought this was a very cute toy and what little boy does not like a boat but he becomes frustrated because the boat sinks so easily. He prefers his other boats over it because this one does not work. Maybe I just got a bad one because generally green toys are very good quality.

Like other reviewers (wish I had read those first), I bought this boat because it looked like a cool bath toy. But it doesn't float. Or, more accurately, it floats until the slightest slosh in the tub capsizes it. It's not like it only goes down if Poseidon here gets soap in her eye -it fundamentally wasn't designed to work as a boat.

While I like that the product is made out of recycled materials, it's pretty silly to source the trash in the USA, ship it to China, and then ship it back as a toy. I prefer "Green Toys" which sources the trash here AND manufacturers it in the USA.

The design aesthetic of the Sprig toys is really charming, but overall their performance is lacking. The Dolphin Adventure boat does float, but it is too unstable to really work as a tub toy, and quickly fills with water and capsizes as soon as a little water gets in the hull. The ladder is fastened to the boat with very weak and spindly attachments, and my 1 year old easily pulled it off, and then got very frustrated when he couldn't put it back. You would think the one thing that would float in this set would be the life preserver - but it sinks like a rock. It is also a choking hazard. My boy enjoys the boat, but we no longer try to use it in actual water, and I am considering just chucking the ladder and preserver into the recycling. I do, however, love that a corporate giant is attempting to make a somewhat "green" toy - I'm just not sure that it has built-to-last sustainability factored in.
