Love It!,

This review is from: Spring Awakening (Paperback)
I couldn't put it down when I first recieved it. Spring Awakening, is an amazing adapation of Wedekind's, Spring's Awakening first written in 1899. I own the original by Wedekind, and really appreciated how Steven Sater was able to maintain the integrity of the original while adapting it to a new libretto. When I read the lyrics of the songs in context to the story, I am nothin short of amazed. My recommendation is to read the script, and utilize the soundtrack at the appropriate times. It really enhances the experience. This book and play alone is magnificent, but coupled with the music of Duncan Shiek it is a masterpiece.

Great Musical,

It's a great product for those people like myself who live a while away from New York City and don't have the time or money to get up there anytime soon. There is also a few sketches of the characters' costumes & a really interesting introduction by Stephen about the scenes he added & took off from the original play. All in all a good buy.

Spring Awakening Book,

Excellent book. EXACTLY line for line from the musical. I highly suggest reading "Spring's Awakening" along with this. It is the original version of this play that the musical is based off of.

Not what I thought it was...,
By Nick Throop "Nick" (Springfield, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spring Awakening (Paperback)
I saw this on the Spring Awakening Official Webpage and thought I was getting the vocal selections. As a theater person I know libretto as the script and the music. Apparently Hal-Leonard thinks differently =). Even though it's not what I intended on getting, it's still a very nice book. I've read it and I've gotten a better understanding for the show. Any SA fan should add this to their collection.

The script is amazing! I needed it for a class performance, and I had so many scenes to choose from. It was both haunting and beautiful. It is well worth the money.

An Excellent Script...but Only Half the Story for True Fans,
This review is from: Spring Awakening (Paperback)
This book was exactly what I'd hoped it would be--the script and lyrics to the Broadway musical I love. If that's all you're looking for--if you just like the soundtrack and want to read the words surrounding them--then by all means buy this book and be satisfied. For true admirers of the play, however, I feel this is (at least) only half the story. Novelist Jonathan Franzen (whose work I happen to love, but even if you don't there's no denying he's a literary giant of our time) loved the original German play by Frank Wedekind, and was incensed by Steven Sater's "insipid" and "over-praised" version, so much so that Franzen published his own contemporary translation a year after the musical premiered. While Franzen makes some good points in the preface to his translation, I still love Sater's version as well. It's how I (and probably most of us) found out about "Spring Awakening" in the first place. Franzen's translation, however, eschews Sater's sanitized contemporary sensibilities and gives us all of Wedekin's original darkness, which is always disturbing or humorous, and often both. I would encourage those who love this play as a work of transgressive literature (and not just that musical with the girl from Glee, wonderful as she is) to check out Franzen's "Spring Awakening" as well. I sincerely hope someone has the cojones to produce his interpretation of this haunting tragedy (there are many English translations, but none as accessible or relevant to contemporary audiences.)

Not for the guitarists,
This review is from: Spring Awakening (Paperback)
I am absolutely in love with this show. The music is phenomenal, and as a guitarist, I've wanted to learn many of these songs knowing they came from the guitar work of Duncan Sheik. I'm writing this review as a warning to guitarists that the guitar parts are laughable wrong at times. I'd say this book is about 60% accurate because Duncan Sheik has to much nuance in his chords that this book fails to capture. Not only are chords often wrong, but chord changes are missing and even in many cases are overcomplicated in attempt to find the correct voicings. With my girlfriend being a singer and pianist this book wasn't wasted, but really the only way to learn these songs on guitar is with a lot of patience and piecing together live footage of performance gleaning insight into the hands positions to start figuring out the actual chords. Also a warning, many people online don't play it correctly either. Good luck learning this amazing show!

I always have liked Spring Awakening since I saw it from the first time, but I didn't know I could actually have the script of the musical right on my hands...When I saw it I was like: 'I have to buy it!' and it's incredible! It's good because, as spring awakening doesn't have its dvd, you can actually 're-watch' it without needing to wait for them to come to your city again, or you can read it for the first time and love it! It's just such an incredible story that is almost impossible not to like. And this book comes even with the sketches of the characters. So, if you are a spring awakening addicted, you must buy it ;) If you aren't, then you should buy it because it is an amazing story.
