Book Description

2000
SPRING BREAK: A Wet Adventure, is the ninth Balona Book by Jonathan Pearce.

Bored with small-town life and the pressures of academia, community college Freshman Joseph Oliver Kuhl plans to trade his new car for a sailboat and travel to the Souoth Seas in search of adventure, wahines, cracked crab, etc. Joe’s plans are upset during Balona’s Sugarbeet Festival by the self-destructive inclination of the boat and by the flooding of the town resulting from an "accidental" break in Balona’s levee.

Joe’s ambitions to become a famous private eye, psychologist, and published poet are further complicated by the crash of Blip Wufser’s news helicopter onto a Balona street, the apparent kidnapping of heiress Claire Preene, and the re-disappearance of Joe’s father.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Reader comments: "Balona feels familiar, horribly like my own home town" and "I wonder if Patella will ever get her way with Joe?" and "You don’t harvest sugarbeets till the fall; how come Balona’s Sugarbeet Festival is in April?" (Answer: Balonans do things in their own way.) An almost-grown-up (9th grader) e-mails (able209@mediaone.net): "Write something about Jack Ordway again (John-Browne’s Body & Sole, ISBN 1-58820-677-7). Joe Kuhl is too dumb to believe." But an 11th grade female reader remarks: "I envision Joe as looking a lot like Brad Pitt." The author agrees with all of these comments and assessments.

About the Author

Now a part-time university teacher and part-time lounge lizard, author Jonathan Pearce is an ex-high school teacher. He has also performed as musician, concrete finisher, bodyguard, cab driver, soldier, radio announcer, and railway mudhop. He is thus familiar with the stimulation and boredom of the workaday world, the dreams and anxieties of youth and their parents, and the interesting dynamics of academia, lower and upper.
