5.0 out of 5 stars The Bootleg Spring Break Original Cast Missing Audio Commentary Track
Hi, I'm David Knell.

I was actually in this movie.

Played Nelson Dalby. The lead role.

Seriously.

Yeah, I know any review I give is apt to be a bit skewed, but let me just say this.

When I saw that Spring Break was finally coming out on DVD 27 years after we made it, I thought, "cool!"

3.0 out of 5 stars The original Spring Break Movie....
This was the movie that started a long list of bad copycat movies about guys and girls on the loose on spring break. The acting was good, if somewhat amateurish.

I don't know about you, but one of my favorite things about DVDs are the bonus features. Audio commentaries, in particular.

Well, when Anchor Bay decided to release Spring Break, they spared every expense, and consequently there are no bonus features. No Commentary. No deleted scenes.

I know. It blows, right?

So I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I gathered a few of the original cast members and we got together and actually recorded our own audio commentary.

It's available on my website at davidknell dot-com forward-slash springbreak.

I'm not allowed to put an actual url in the review, but you can figure it out, I think.

So, if you're a fan of the film buy the DVD here on Amazon right now.

Then check out my website for the missing bonus features.

Before the MAN threatens us with legal action and we wimp out and have to take it down.

Hope you enjoy it!

David Knell

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure and Simple 80's Fun, May 8, 2004
By
This review is from: Spring Break [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is one of the best, and most under-rated, fun movies from the 80's (right up there with Night Of The Comet.) WHY ISN'T IT ON DVD YET?? My video is wearing out. You don't even have to be a guy to enjoy this one. I'm a 35 year old wife and mom and it's one of my favorite movies of all time. Maybe it's because I never got to do the whole wild Spring Break, much less ever party in the legendary Fort Lauderdale back in it's prime... but everytime I watch this movie, it takes me back to that wonderful decade and remember how much fun it was. The movie has tons of cheesy music, yes I walk around humming "I wanna do it, do it, I wanna do it to you..." 22 years later. Corrine was hot! Whoa... even the typical 'youth overcoming the evil adult' plot works here. And only in a movie like this would Nelson get a hottie like Susie.

This was the movie that started a long list of bad copycat movies about guys and girls on the loose on spring break. The acting was good, if somewhat amateurish. The one bright spot for guys that are looking for gorgeous women in movies of this type, is the appearance of Corinne Alphen (who later married Ken Wahl of 'Wiseguy' fame), as the lead singer of the all girl band. She has never failed to be overwhelmingly stunning, simply by walking across the set. This movie is set above all the rest of the grade Z copies in that there is actually a plot that the viewer can relate to, and you really believe in the relationship between the main characters. It is no surprise that it was never nominated for ANY award, but it is still a good movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spring Break : A Classic, February 11, 2000
By

This review is from: Spring Break [VHS] (VHS Tape)
A movie that is unfairly lumped into the early 80's genre of "college spring break hijinks" movies, Spring Break is the one that stands apart. The movie contains a veritable cornucopia of hysterical lines and exchanges, as well as (unlike most of its followers) characters you can really associate with and come to care about even. To watch the interaction between the nerdy Nelson and his jacked up buddy Adam and the ultra-cool Stu and O.T. is to watch brilliant dialogue read by fine, if unpolished, actors. Even periphery characters such as Nelson's ornery step-father ("He's wh- he's gone ? Nelson's gone !") , the lovable bellhop Eesh, and his drug delaing, van-dwelling friend ("You want pot, isn't that it ? Heheheheheh") add the the fun and excitement. This movie is funny from start to finish and surely will end up being a cult classic for generations to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic 80's, June 4, 2009
This review is from: Spring Break (DVD)
It's about time Spring Break was released on DVD.Not only is this movie extremely funny, but it is also a great piece of history of what it was like at Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale in the early 80's.This movie was filmed on location in Fort Lauderdale at a bunch of the big nightclubs that were on A1A.Most of the movie nightclub partying is filmed at the Candy Store which was probably the most famous club on the A1A strip in the 70's and 80's.The drinking age was 18 in Florida at the time,so the college students were very young. It really was a great time to be a teenager in Florida. You have to love the 80's.Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars For 80's summer flicks - this is as good as they get, September 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Spring Break [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The movie combines the cools and the nerds for the first time and the results are awesome! Out of all of the 80's summer flicks I have seen, this movie contains the most babes, cars and classic moments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spring Break Rocks!, May 27, 2009

I've been dying for this 1983 flick of SPRING BREAK to be released on DVD and am so delighted to hear that it will finally be released this Summer, since SPRING BREAK is a hilarious movie about some high school and college boys rooming together at a dumpy hotel in Ft. Lauderdale doing the typical things that teenage boys like and want to do on a nice relaxing vacation trying to escape from reality by trying to get drunk and score on girls, yet was amazes me is it just so happens that the producer and director of the original FRIDAY THE 13TH(Sean S. Cunningham)who typically directs horror flicks just happened to direct this comedy with a success since SPRING BREAK is a totally different kind of movie than FRIDAY THE 13TH or any other kind of flick that Sean S. Cunningham produces and/or directs.

So if you liked PORKYS, HARDBODIES, FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, or PRIVATE SCHOOL, you'll definetly like SPRING BREAK.

As a matter of fact this movie takes me all the way back to memory lane to my childhood days when I was living in the Imperial Valley since I was 10 years old in the 4th grade at Rockwood Elementry School in Calexico, CA at the time of its theatrical release in the Spring of 1983 when I was still living in my hometown(El Centro, CA).

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic 80s Movie, September 13, 2007
By

This review is from: Spring Break [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I used to watch Spring Break a lot in the 80s. It was on one of the cable movie channels just about every week during the summer of '84. (I was a bored, unemployed kid) As a teen, I wasn't looking for any depth to this movie and as an adult, I still don't expect any - IT'S CALLED "SPRING BREAK"! So, if you understand that you are viewing a movie that is born out of the grind house films of the 70s and is nothing like "Beaches," you should be in the right mindset to enjoy this film for what it is.

It's fluffy escapism - beer, babes, guys, cars, beer, belly flop contests, beer, etc. Over the years, it has also become a bit of a time capsule to the spirit of 1983, the year it was released. I guess it's kind of like my generation's Annette Funicello "beach" movies, but with more drinking and innuendo.

The director, Sean S. Cunningham, also directed "Friday the 13th" (the original). I'd argue that in the same way "Friday the 13th" is considered a "classic" of the teen slasher genre, "Spring Break" should be considered a "classic" of the teen beach party genre (if there is such a thing).

You won't be left analyzing this film when it's over, but perhaps you will feel refreshed after taking a trip back in time and escaping reality for 90 minutes.

And, yes, this deserves to be on DVD!

I can't believe Spring break is FINALLY being released on DVD!!!! It is one of my FAVORITE terrible 80's movies! So bad ...it's awesome! Teenagers in 1983 saving a hotel from a hostile takeover --- pure 80's CHEEZE! The music, the clothes (well lack of), those were the days! It makes me feel like a high school freshman all over again.
