Book Description

March 1, 2009

With creditors hounding her, Kendall's spendthrift lifestyle has finally caught up with her. Her roommates are caught up in problems too. So when Lelani's parents offer to host the girls in Hawaii, it sounds like the vacation everyone needs-but no one can afford. A really big garage sale is scheduled, but fraying tempers threaten the teamwork needed to pull it off. Will they finally turn to the One who can really help?

Relationships are hard work - and when you've got your first apartment, a real job, and grown-up responsibilities, too, they're loaded with confusion, emotion, and secrets you can't tell to anyone but God. The four unlikely roommates of 86 Bloomberg Place and their stories might just sound like someone you know.

About the Author

Over the years, Melody Carlson has worn many hats, from pre-school teacher to youth counselor to political activist to senior editor. But most of all, she loves to write! Currently she freelances from her home. In the past eight years, she has published over ninety books for children, teens, and adults--with sales totaling more than two million and many titles appearing on the ECPA Bestsellers List. Several of her books have been finalists for, and winners of, various writing awards. And her "Diary of a Teenage Girl" series has received great reviews and a large box of fan mail.

She has two grown sons and lives in Central Oregon with her husband and chocolate lab retriever. They enjoy skiing, hiking, gardening, camping and biking in the beautiful Cascade Mountains.

More About the Author

Melody Carlson has written around 200 books for teens, women and children. That's a lot of books, but mostly she considers herself a "storyteller." Her books range from serious issues like schizophrenia (Finding Alice) to lighter topics like house-flipping (A Mile in My Flip-Flops) but most of the inspiration behind her fiction comes right out of real life. Her young adult novels (Diary of a Teenage Girl, TrueColors etc.) appeal to teenage girls around the world. Her annual Christmas novellas become more popular each year. She's won a number of awards (including the Rita and Gold Medallion) and some of her books have been optioned for film/TV. Carlson has two grown sons and makes her home in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and yellow Lab dog. PROS

--Fun, dramatic and exciting reading with lots of character-driven plot and character development. All the characters grow and develop a lot throughout the story.

--This book seems to de-emphasize money and appearance, especially as Kendall learns that being a shopaholic is destructive. (I felt the first book focused a little too much on designer clothes and expensive makeup.)

CONS

--In book 2, Anna seemed at best not interested in her Catholic upbringing and at worst maybe ever-so-slightly offended by it, admitting she's "not sure" if she believes in God or fully believes in her religion. In book 3 (this one) she's staunchly pro-life because abortion is "against [her] religion." I thought she wasn't sure about her religion?

--Wow, Megan is an (unbelievably) good missionary. She won over Lelani in book 2 and it seems like Kendall's close to believing too (also helped by the new devoutly Christian boyfriend she met in Maui). "Missionary dating" has turned Marcus from a not-so-committed maybe-believer to a regular churchgoer and prayer partner. We don't need to worry about Catholic Anna or her boyfriend Edmond (who is apparently Episcopalian, we learn in this book). Who's left? Gil? In book 2 he at least said he was "open," so it won't take long.

I know it sounds dumb, but in real life people get very offended by Christianity. You'd think at least one (or more) of the gang would not be so "open" to it.

**Overall, a fun read, and I can't wait for the last book!**
