A fast-paced and very entertaining read,
By
This review is from: Spring Collection (Paperback)
After Scruples Two and Lovers, I was a bit worried that Judith Krantz, my favorite pure-entertainment novelist, was stuck in an '80s timewarp. (Her publicity photo on the bookjacket certainly is.) But this latest book is very much of the '90s, showing that she can adapt to a different era from the time of Princess Daisy, I'll Take Manhattan and co. Spring Collection is a lot faster-paced than all her other books, and most of the action takes place within just a couple of weeks. All the heroines - there are five in this one - are very appealing, and it also features one of the most attractive of any of her main male characters, Jacques Necker. (If you know any real Swiss men like that, please let me know!)

I like her books, I really do! Wonderful text, good language, well-paced stories. However, books like Till We Meet Again, Princess Daisy or Dazzle showed the characters growing and developping, while Scruples 2, Lovers and this one are just like - and Krantz says it herself towards the end of the book - like an extra long episode of Love Boat. You enjoy it hugely, but you cannot get emotionally involved with her characters as much as in her other novels. The book was a treat, I'll read the next one as soon as it comes out, but I hope that, at some point, Judith Krantz will write something a bit more emotionally strong again, not just the best soap opera in the world. But then, I am not complaining (too much), the best soap opera is still mighty good reading!!

Judith Krantz re-vamped for the 90s!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Spring Collection (Paperback)
In her latest tale of glamour and passion Judith Krantz shows her new, 90s style. The novel's cast of characters will take a shortcut to your heart with their directness, vivacity and sense of humor, even if you have no clue what a Paul Mitchell hair is. Spring Collection is the best of all the recent attempts (Models Inc., Pret-a-Porte, Swan, etc.) to fictionalize the elusive world of fashion

I have always been a Danielle Steel fan and have read all her books, so in an effort to have something new to read I checked out Judith Krantz. I am so glad I started with Spring Collection and followed with the Jewels of Tessa Kent. Judith is an awesome writer and I will surely be checking out her older books, as well as any new releases...

Undoubtedly Krantz,

Well, it seems like Judith Krantz did it again. But this one takes us to the glittering world of fashion. I can say that this is not the best from her, although it's not intellectually reading, it's an enjoyable read. I hope that her next novel, "The Jewels of Tessa Kent", will be better. I can't wait. I hope that she won't fail us this time.

silly in most parts, interesting in few,

A novel involving a world of fashion, it was a great idea. However, I was slightly disappointed. I thought that it was silly to have an antagonist who threw his manhood in womens' faces throughout the book. Then an unjustified marraige proposal that was developed from a simple father and daughter-like relationship, how did that happen? I also hated how the novel ended. It was a poorly rushed and lame wrap-up. There were some things that I did like about this book. Going back to the father and daughter-like relationship between Jacque and Jordan, I found thier conversations together enjoyable. Also, the lesbian love scene was the first I have ever read. At first I felt akward and almost embarrassed to be reading those few pages. Then I just sat back and went with the flow. It was quite a read.
Overall, I thought that this book had the right formula, but mixed it all wrong.

Gorgeous pink froth!,

While admitting that this book isn't the greatest piece of fiction ever written, I'm awarding it 5 stars for the sheer enjoyment it gave me. As a model in a former, very distant life, the descriptions of the clothes, dressing rooms etc. are very close to real life, but coming from an era when models or mannequins as they were then called, weren't 6 feet tall or had their ribs sticking out, I would have been the first to have been intimidated by those beautiful amazons. The story concerns three girls who are all under contract to the same model agency and are just beginners. A contest has been arranged in Paris to show the first collection of a new designer, an unscrupulous sleaze who uses and abuses women and who preys on aspiring models. The actual story was a bit of pink fluff, but sprinkled with really great desciptions of marvellous clothes and spiced up with very intimate descriptions of the sex lives of the main players. Enjoy this when you feel like something light but very entertaining (if you enjoy fashion).

Good, but not as good as Scruples 2.,

Spring Collection was a good book, but I must say I like the 80's style of writing better. Spring Collection was easy enough to read, but Scruples 2 is my favorite. I'm ready to check out "The Jewels of Tessa Kent!"

Offensive,

I'm not a great fan of Judith Krantz but bought this book anyway for a quarter at a thrift store. I'm glad I didn't pay more. As usual, Ms. Krantz works harder at trying to impress us with her knowledge of the glitzy jet set and fashion than she does at realistic dialogue. She has some good characters who have looks, intelligence, honor, and the potential to be really memorable but she destroys it everytime she has them open their mouth. The worst part of this book was the sensuality. She outdid herself with graphic detail in the sexual scenes that were abusive and violent but skimmed over the tender moments between people who had real affection for each other. I won't waste another quarter. |
