5.0 out of 5 stars The *BEST* Beginning Photography Book, July 30, 2008

This review is from: Spring Into Digital Photography (Paperback)
I had low expectations for this book. It didn't have any reviews, was selling for under a buck, and claimed to include a "$65 value" white balance card. Turns out to be one of the best books I've ever read. I completely devoured it.

Quite simply, the information in it puts other beginning photography books to shame. It answered many questions I didn't even know to ask: additive vs subtractive colors (RGB vs CMYK), golden section and rule of thirds, calibration, and much more. It also explains the typical photo-editing process--how to adjust white balance, sharpen, and otherwise post-process photos. And after looking at the recommended equipment, I purchased a 12-24 zoom lens which is a lot of fun and has opened up new panoramas.

This has also helped me better understand my other photography books. All in all, it's an exceptional book. Only regrets are: too short and the website looks deserted. I'm guessing there might not be a follow-up book, which is a real shame.

I am one of many who has just recently converted from film to digital. To say the least I was quite hesitant...until I met Spring into Digital Photography. This book definitely covers the needs of the beginner, intermediate and advanced level photographer.

I found the answers to those questions about digital photography that I wanted to ask, as well as the answers to the questions that I didn't know how to ask.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice, June 9, 2009

This review is from: Spring Into Digital Photography (Paperback)
This is a very nicely written book on digital photography, covering the 3 basics of making a photograph (light it, compose it, expose it), post production processing, printing, and optimizing work flow. The book has an engaging writing style, good content, and logical organization.

In particular I thought the sections on lighting in the first part of chapter 1 were the best examples I've yet seen on the impact lighting has on how an object appears. For me, at the time a very beginner photographer, that one section was worth the cost of the entire book.

Definitely worth a read.
