As any conductor knows, the Rite of Spring is a technical challenge more than an interpretive one. Probably why there are so many fine ones out there. This Horenstein is easily the most magical and atmospheric Rite of Spring around--shares my top spot with, of all things, an old recording with van Beinum and the Concertgebouw which might be the most exquisitely played Rite of Spring of all time. Plenty of others are excellent but these two are transcendent!

After listening to some of the sound samples I decided to pick this up--I mainly am a fan of Horenstein because of his Mahler and Bruckner, but after hearing the color and character presented in the short sound bytes (not to mention the refreshing, interesting tempos like the one for the dance of the adolescents), I could not resist. I was hoping that the sound quality would be better once I got the CD and put it in the player, but it is about what it sounds like on the wmplayer if only marginally better. Audiophiles stay away. But if you're looking for a colorful, I would almost say idiosyncratic, performance of the rite then you should hear this. The orchestra is not like LSO or Cleveland and the like, but somehow they and Horenstein manage to get some exciting and stimulating colors, character and drama to the listener through the less than ideal sound quality which makes me wonder how much more exciting this would sound if it was recorded under better conditions and technology. That being said the Firebird is recorded better and the colors are that much more exciting. Even with the inferior sound, this recording still provides me with plenty of exciting, and interesting colors and dramatic character to savor in the music, which may not be note perfect, but the performance and Horenstein's vision keep you listening.
