The Complete Package,
This review is from: Spring Fires (Mass Market Paperback)
I read "You and No Other" and thoroughly enjoyed it. I ordered the other 12 and am awaiting receipt also of "Crimson Intrigue" written by her under the pseudonyn Devon Lindsay. Devon Lindsay by the way was the feisty heroine in Silver Storm. I have four more books written by this author to read and I can't wait to read them and see if they are as good as the other nine. I suggest that you read them in order to enhance your enjoyment. I like this author's writing style: her word usage is so descriptive that you feel you are a "fly on the wall".
I loved this one in particular because she updates you on the lives of characters from previous books. The central character, Nicholi Beauviage is too charming mand so self-assured. His quick wit is of stuff to remember. The heroine, Lisette is a strong women and not afraid to take risks after sensing the depth of love they could behold. I wanted to continue to read on and on. I sighed when I finished. I'm an incurable romantic so what can I say. Ms. Wright has a style similar to Kathleen Woodiwiss of which I was a great fan! I know Ms. Wright is not writing anymore, but I would sure like to have read "Tempest" which she stated she had begun when "Barbados" was published.

Sighhhh, Nicholai Beauvisage....Now there's a man! I'm terrible at writing reviews, but these novels of Family Beauvisage need to be read! Lisette and her insecurities almost ruin her opportunity for true love and passion with this delicious man! Wouldn't we all want to marry a Beauvisage??
Cynthia Wright continues to succeed with her great writing, her details of the revolutionary period (which I learned more about from her books, then I did in school!) and the characters that become like family! I'm so glad we get to visit them in each book.

This review is from: Spring Fires (The Beauvisage Novels, Book 3) (Kindle Edition)
Nicholai Beauvisage returns to his family in Philadelphia after escaping death during the French Revolution. He had been gone for 10 long years. Lisette Hahn is the proud independent woman who runs the Hahn Coffeehouse where meetings of Political Figures meet. Nicholai & Lisette meet and develop a bizarre relationship. As their relationship is growing, Nicholai received news that drives them apart.Other characters from previous books appear and you will be updated on their lives (ie. Caro, Alec, Lion & Meagan-my favs) Ms. Wright weaves a great story & continues her tapestry of historical romance which takes you from Philadelphia to London. A Great Story! Don't miss this romance of "Nicky" & "Lisette".

Wright can tell a good story and this 3rd in the Beauvisage series is no exception, but this one had some improbable plot developments that seemed a bit contrived and that kept me from rating it higher. (I am sparing you details as it would give away the plot.) The story's ok and if you're reading the series you probably won't want to skip this one but I don't think it's the best of the series. (I loved SILVER STORM.)This is the story of Nicholai Beauvisage, younger brother to Alexandre (both of whom we met in CAROLINE). Set in 1793, Nicholai returns to America from his family's estate in France after escaping death during the French Revolution. He lost a woman he loved in the chaos that was the Revolution and now is looking to get back into Philadelphia life with his family. Beautiful and independent, Lisette Hahn, an Austrian immigrant, runs the Hahn CoffeeHouse in Philadelphia, the new capitol. The CoffeeHouse is a meeting place for figures like Thomas Jefferson. Lisette is proud she is able to run the CoffeeHouse alone now that her father is sick but she doesn't know how long that can continue. She just wants an escape and it seems Nicholai is willing to provide one. Just as it looks like something is developing between them, Nicolai gets some news that will take him to London. Wright does a good job creating wonderful characters and the host of those from prior books in the series return for appearances, which weaves the books together. I do recommend reading them in order. As always, Nicholai is charming, but at times Lisette, who is otherwise a strong independent young woman, seemed to make unwise (even bizarre) decisions and was even a shrew for a brief period. I can't say I was fond of that kind of action on the part of the heroine. Should you want to read more, here is the list of books in the Beauvisage series: CAROLINE (1977) TOUCH THE SUN (1978) SPRING FIRES (1983) NATALYA (1991) If you like reading a series in time order, as I do, here are the books in Wright's intertwined Raveneau and Beauvisage series in chronological order: 1780 - SILVER STORM 1783 - CAROLINE 1789 - TOUCH THE SUN 1793 - SPRING FIRES 1814 - SURRENDER THE STARS 1814 - NATALYA 1818 - SILVER SEA (originally BARBADOS) TEMPEST (to be released in 2012) |
