I've been listening to this record on and off for years now and it never gets old. This is truly the point of power pop. While the disc includes two or three lackluster entries, Draining the Pool for You and most of the rest of this collection make it a must. Why are the Go-Betweens so obscure? Escapes me.

This album survives beautifully, a meeting of gilded pop, mournful reflections, and jaunty spritefulness. No, it doesn't cohere perfectly as a masterpiece should, and yes a few tracks lean into a velvety postgraduate pretence.

But please pay no attention to the two smarter-than-thou reviews that lie here. That they are riddled with offhand name-dropping to other bands, belie-ing the fact that the reviewers are playing streetwise critics rather than speaking from the heart.

My favorite album from Go-Betweens, as a matter of fact, is Before Hollywood. But still this one is a true gift, believe me. I just can't believe they are so unknown. Better for us who look for different and really enjoyable songs. ....
