Ted Wharton is dying of AIDS. With not too much time left, twin brother Clay arrives back in Seaside to try to rebuild his relationship with his brother, damaged because of Clay's attitude toward Ted's lifestyle choices. Meanwhile, this causes a problem for Leigh Spenser. While Ted is her best friend, she is holding a secret from Clay she's not sure if she wants exposed. But with the threatening phone calls Leigh keeps getting, she may have no choice to turn to Clay for help.

I really wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book. I couldn't decide if it was mystery or romance or something else entirely. This is a dysfunctional family drama and romance that pulls you in from the very beginning. While many of the major plot points are easily guessed early on, I had to keep reading to see how things would play out. In fact, I stayed up way too late too many nights in a row to read just a little further.

Frankly, I don't see how Gayle Roper could have written this book. The characters go through so much pain and heartache I could barely deal with it some times. If that's how I felt reading it, I can only image what it was like to write.

Ms. Roper doesn't shy away from tackling such issues as homosexuality and premarital sex. She handles them with honesty both in the consequences and what the Bible says. It was refreshing to see in this novel things I've believed for years regarding sin and the forgiveness God offers to all sinners.

While not the type of book I would normally read, it really got to me. I couldn't stop thinking about the characters and the themes even when I wasn't reading it. I highly recommend this book.

I was blown away by Spring Rain! I made the mistake of getting near the end around the time I should have been in bed, and wound up staying awake an extra two hours because I simply could not put that book down.

It's hard to say which plotline captivated me more- the romantic tension between Leigh and Clay or the smoldering conflict between Clay and Ted, fueled by severe stubbornness on the part of both brothers over the issue of Ted's homosexuality and brought out now because of Ted's impending death from AIDS.

You never know what to expect from any book dealing with sensitive topics such as AIDS and homosexuality, the author gives these timely issues the attention they deserve without becoming preachy. Through the interaction between Clay and his brother Ted, she gets the reader to see the fine line between righteousness and self-righteousness, and prayerfully, to be able to discern that difference in our own lives.

Not many authors could navigate the maze of family secrets and disagreements without turning their book into one big soap opera, but Gayle Roper has succeeded by treating each plotline with loving care, and giving us a clear look into the hearts of each character, from the youngest to the eldest.

I am eagerly awaiting more books in the SeaSide Seasons series (try to say THAT five times fast!)

This is a fast moving romance with a lovely sea-side setting. With this as background, Gayle tackles the hard issue of AIDS, and does a great job at it. I thought I wouldn't enjoy a fiction account that included such a "pc" topic, but, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It encouraged me on a spiritual level, too. Good summer (and of course, spring) reading material! Gayle Roper has matured into a fine writer!!

Spring Rain is a wonderful story of family conflict, blossoming romance and the healing power that faith brings in times of heartache and struggle. Roper's characters are likeable, even charming, but not too perfect to be real. The romantic element--especially between the characters of Julia and David--is heartwarming.

I usually get tired around nine o'clock and am in bed by ten. However, when I read Spring Rain, I stayed up until 1:15 AM-until I finished reading it. I couldn't put it down! Gayle does a masterful job of combining a sensitive subject with a powerful story. While she addresses AIDS, homosexuality and Christianity, at no time does Spring Rain feel preachy. Instead it is a beautiful love story told with mystery and drama. If you like a good read, if you like a sweet romance, and if you like a touch of suspense Spring Rain is the book for you!

A decade ago, Leigh Spenser's true love Clay Wharton left Seaside New Jersey and her. She gave birth to his son, but he never returned for her so she raised Billy by herself with some help from Clay's twin brother Ted.

However, Ted is dying from AIDS and Clay has returned to Seaside to be with him in his sibling's final moments even if he loathes his twin's gay lifestyle. However, Clay also has to contend with the love he left behind and their son, who hates him for abandoning them. Leigh must deal with knowing that in spite of everything that has passed, she still loves Clay, who wants to spend the rest of his life making it up to his family.

SPRING RAIN is a powerful realistic look at life, especially redemption. The story line tugs at the reader as Clay realizes that regardless of Ted's sexual preference, he is still his beloved twin and he will do anything to comfort him. Clay also understands that time is on his side when it comes to obtaining forgiveness from Leigh and Billy and, like with Ted, he will do anything to become a fixture in their lives. Gayle Roper writes a strong tale that centers on plenty of room for everybody in God's tent.

Roper gently and biblically tackles some of society's most difficult issues in this novel. As the two main characters Leigh and Clay struggle with their past and the present condition of Clay's dying twin, they both learn first hand how to show and share Christ's love.

The remaining novels in this series are just as good as the first.

After an one-time indiscretion on her graduation night, Leigh becomes a single mother. Ten years later, she has put her life together when the father of her son comes back to town. Leigh has to deal with her continuing feelings for Clay as he deals with his for her. At the same time, Clay's brother is dying of AIDS which adds more tension. Then threatening phones calls come from Leigh's father's former cell-mate; he wants the "treasure," but Leigh has no idea what he's talking about. As they deal with all of these situations, Leigh and Clay grow closer together and overcome their past difficulties with each other. I enjoyed this Christian thriller/romance, and I recommend it if you're looking for a good, fun read.

This book is more romance novel than anything else, so it may be the last in the series for me. Not a fan of formulaic romances. But, as other reviewers wrote, Roper deserves much credit for handling beautifully the sensitive issues of AIDS as well as teen pregnancy. She was true to Scripture but also covered it all in grace and love, the perfect example for all believers. Developing the character of an AIDS victim goes a long way to personalizing the issue and avoiding stereotypes. I just hate to see any Christian author use the term "Mother Nature" in their writing. That term is reserved for secularists who personify Mother Earth as an entity with a mind of "her own". Nature, yes, Mother, no.

This was a book whose plot and characters stayed with me long after I finished reading it. Gayle's treatment of difficult topics like AIDS, unplanned pregnancy and how God answers prayer, showed both wisdom and skill in crafting this story. I would recommend this book, and have done so many times, without reservation.
