What walks down stairs alone or in pairs and makes a slinkedy sound...

'member that commercial from when we were kids. Well I think of it whenever I use this handy little bugger. I first saw this at a counter display with a block of pine with about a hundred finish nails stuck about 3/8ths proud in it. I placed it on the nail puled back the top and bam bam, two hits and it counter sunk the nail. Pretty cool so I bought one. The next week I used it on quarter round trim when the occaisional nail did'nt shoot all the way below the surface with my Pasload angled trim master nail gun (another review on the Pasload coming). What is cool about this tool is you can keep it in your shirt pocket or tool belt and countersink finish nails without reaching for your hammer. Another thing is it is much harder to accidentally slip off the nail head and make a bigger hole in your piece of trim like sometimes happens when using a regular nail set. It also works good for punching a starter whole for drilling in light gauge metal or when you're drilling the hole for drawer pulls and you want to make sure you get the hole started in the exact spot you marked. However it is not as powerful as a regular nail set struck with a hammer so if the wood is really hard or if there is a knot under the nail you'll have to pull the spring back a bunch of times to set the nail. It generally works with two pulls on nails under one a half inches. A two and a half inch 15 gauge nail driven through a door case into shims and fir framing is bit much for the impact this little guy can provide. I still give it 5 stars for speed and convenience, just keep in mind it has limitations.

Had I not seen these in use before purchasing I would not have believed how well they work. For fine detail it is much easier to set a nail with this than with a hammer and regular nail set. Ditto for the counter punch - much easier to get it exactly right. Great gift idea for anyone who does woodworking/handyman kinda stuff too.

This is essentially a spring with shaped weights on either side that are pulled and, when released, slammed into the other side, imparting a good amount of force. Also, this is a very intriguing looking tool. Looks like somebody's experiment that just happened to work great, and will be sure to draw a question or two from people that use traditional nail sets or center punch tools.

Pros:
Strong. Despite being compact and light weight, this thing packs a punch.

Cons:
It would be better with a rod between the two sides to keep it lined up properly and prevent damage to the spring during transportation/storage with other tools.

Tips:
Your thoughts while using will be with the end that is being pulled and released. This is wrong. Hold the working end tight and securely where you want it, as the equal and opposite force of releasing the other side will pull the working end away from the target just as hard as the pulled end is speeding toward the working end. This can result is missed strikes.

This thing brings a smile to my face! I've recently taken up woodworking and have bought around 40 different products of all shapes and sizes in a span of a few short days, this is the first one I'm reviewing because there's so much that's awesome about it. It's retro-cool in its looks, sturdy, has a unique, unmatched utility and effective (man, is it effective!)

I put this guy to work yesterday to mark center points for screws I needed to drill at precise distances inside a wooden cupboard at an awkward angle... There's no way in hell I could have done this with even something resembling accuracy with a regular center punch and hammer. I am in love with this tiny little genius of a tool and Spring Tools have themselves a lifelong fan. I plan to take a look at some of the other stuff they have, mini-chisel comes to mind...

This is a very handy device to have. It won't replace your regular nail sets, but it is great for setting a few nails here and there when your gun doesn't quite set all of them. Here's my likes and dislikes.

Pros:
- Convenient. easier to grab than a hammer and nail set and fits in tight spaces.
- 2 different sizes on 1 tool
- stronger than it looks

Cons:
- Lifespan. I've had mine for a couple years now and the spring is getting kind of worn out
- Durability. It didn't take to long to chip a couple small pieces off the larges set. (smaller set still in great shape)

The usefulness of this tool definitely outweigh the cons. I would absolutely buy this tool again.

I purchased a set of these spring tools approximately 5 years ago and used them frequently in the home repair business. Unfortunately I left the tailgate of my truck open while in a hurry to run to the lumberyard and the tool box fell out (doh) on the way and upon turning around some fine person decided they needed my tools more than I did. GONE
When doing a mental inventory of all the things that were in my box, the first things that came to mind and bothered me most was my set of 5 Noxon Spring Tools which were promptly replaced.
In my mind they are a must have and indespensible.
