This review is from: Spring Training in Clearwater: Fencebusters and Fastballs from the Philadelphia Philles and the Clearwater Threshers (Paperback)
Overall, a worthwhile book that every Phillies and Threshers fan should read. It was a concise, readable history of Clearwater's baseball history and the Phillies's history there. The photographs were excellent but more text would have been nice. It would have been nice to have included more insights into the daily lives of minor league players for the Clearwater Threshers and Gulf Coast Phillie; the daily routine of spring training from the perspectives of players, fans, coaches and executives; and some material about the Florida Instructional League-which was barely mentioned-and Phillies Phantasy Camps, which were not mentioned at all. It was mentioned in the introduction that the Phillies facilties in Clearwater are used year round. Well, great, write about how they are used year round. There could have been a chapter titled, "One Year in Clearwater." January-Phillies Phantasy Camp, Mid-February through March-spring training; April through early September, Clearwater Threshers-halfway to the major leagues; Mid-June through early September-Gulf Coast League Phillies, starting out in the minors; and mid-September through October, Florida Instructional League.Still, for Phillies fans, the book is a must-have! |
