4.0 out of 5 stars Have you ever..., April 3, 2000
This review is from: 21 Ways to Springboard Your Speaking, Training & Consulting Career (Paperback)
Have you ever wondered how people jump-start their careers in speaking, training, or consulting? This book, 21 Ways to Springboard Your Speaking, Training & Consulting Career by Marjorie Brody, CSP, gives many good suggestions for how people do exactly that. The book is concise and easy to read. Brody is very practical and realistic with her suggestions. At the start of the book, she gives a list of questions for the reader to answer in regards to their career. These questions help the reader to start to think about their own careers so that they can compare and contrast her suggestions to what they do. Going along with this, Brody inserts a page at the end of most of the 21 suggestions to allow room for the reader to write how or what they can do to implement that suggestion. Even though I was not able to use this feature at this time, I found it to be a good practical way for professionals to try to incorporate the author's suggestions into their own careers. It gives them space to think about the suggestions and how they can apply them. Her style of writing is straightforward, which makes this book a quick read. Each suggestion is a separate chapter, and the supporting materials within the chapters are bulleted for easy reference. I had no problem understanding the language or how the suggestions could be implemented. As far as I could tell from the introduction and the rest of the text, Brody uses or has used these tactics for becoming a successful speaker, trainer, and consultant to get to where she is today. For this reason, I feel that the information is very practical and useful for professionals in these fields. She knows what she is talking about and is able to show this in the way that she writes. In terms of the content of the book, I think that it is good. As one progresses through the book, they notice that there seems to be some repetition, but I feel that this is important. For example, she talks about networking, membership in professional organizations, and getting references in many of the suggestions. I think that this repetition helps the reader to understand just how important these simple things really are to the speaker, trainer, and consultant. One of the downfalls of this book is the fact that it focuses almost exclusively on external speaker, trainer, and consultant. There is one mention of the internal professional near the end of the book saying that they can implement most of the suggestions, but that is all that is ever said. I feel that this is something that Brody should have been stated earlier in the book or could have been implement throughout each suggestion. Overall, I feel that this book, 21 Ways to Springboard Your Speaking, Training & Consulting Career by Marjorie Brody, CSP, is a good way for speakers, trainers, and consultants to evaluate their current careers. It is a straightforward and extremely helpful guide to improve one's career. One does not need to implement all of the suggestions right away; even just a few of them could help the reader take their career to the next level.
