This product was a disappointment. It appeared to be everything I need to monitor my gardens for approaching freeze conditions, and the soil dryness monitoring would have been a bonus.
But even though spaced at most 50 feet away in a window with a clear line of site, the longest it ever held a connection between the inside and outside pieces was two days. Most of the time connection was lost as soon as I went in the house, even in a window 39 feet away. I think if you spaced it just a few feet away from a window, with absolutely no plants or anything else in the way, it might work.
Up here in the Rockies I have quite a temperature range in my gardens based on air flow and proximity to rock walls or house walls. So I need to be able to monitor the temperature in the garden, not just air temperature near the house. Also, the weather forecast can sometimes be way off. A week ago we had a forecast for a nice day and I'd planned on working in the gardens. I woke up to subfreezing temperatures and several inches of snow on the ground. If this product had worked, I could at least have pulled the plants on my deck indoors, and perhaps covered a few favorite flowering plants in the gardens with frost quilt.
This appears to be low end product. The first one I received had the tiny screws so tight it was impossible to open the battery compartment on the outdoor unit. None of even my eyeglass screwdrivers had a head small enough to do the job right, either. For someone serious about gardening and frost protection, a well designed product would be the only way to go even it it were significantly more expensive.
This product oompares poorly to the Oregon Scientific indoor/outdoor thermometers which I've used for years and have an amazing range even through several stories and walls. However they don't have the alarm or soil moisture functions.
I have returned this item twice, once because I couldn't get the battery compartment open, and the second one because it wouldn't maintain connection. Amazon has been wonderful about both returns.
