4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Story! But Start At the Beginning!
I found this book AFTER I'd read the Springwater Series (four small books, each about an individual character). I found references in those books to this, so went in search of this book. This book set the stage for the Springwater Series. But it is never too late to go back and gain the history! I recommend reading this book, then the Springwater Series, then finish...

I found this book AFTER I'd read the Springwater Series (four small books, each about an individual character). I found references in those books to this, so went in search of this book. This book set the stage for the Springwater Series. But it is never too late to go back and gain the history! I recommend reading this book, then the Springwater Series, then finish off with Springwater Christmas! I have also seen that a new book, Springwater Wedding is coming out in 2001! I am impatiently waiting for that book to arrive, and I probably won't be able to wait for the soft covered version.... Because I enjoy this author and this particular series soooo much!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great romance from a great author, February 21, 2002
This review is from: Springwater (Paperback)
I first read SPRINGWATER when it first came out. I've since re-read it several times, loving it each time. Evangeline's plight of marrying a man sight unseen takes on a whole range of emotions when she falls in love with his best friend, Scully, who is sent to take care of her until his friend returns. The build up of their growing feelings, knowing they can't be together, touches the reader's heart. Their eventual parting leaves the reader itching with anticipation and heartfelt sorrow at their final goodbye. Happy endings are a must, so don't dispair, just read it. Miller has done a wonderful job with this series, but SPRINGWATER is my favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic beginning of a new series!!, October 15, 1999

I am thrilled to recommend this book and all those that follow in the Springwater Series. Each one makes you anxious to pick the next to find out how the people in Springwater are doing. The mail-order bride concept of this time period has fascinated me. How did those women find the courage to go off into the vast unknown to meet a man that could very well be more trouble than they left behind. I can't wait to read Springwater Christmas that I just picked up in the store this weekend.

I found this book to be very entertaining. It was a fast and easy read. The characters blended well together and the love interest was deep and with morals.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and entertaining, February 20, 2000
This review is from: Springwater (Paperback)
I found this book to be a very entertaining little read. If you're looking for a complex plot or deep philosophical discussion, look elsewhere. This is pure entertainment for those days when your brain has been used enough already! I also found that it inspired me to do my housekeeping, which is a minor miracle. I hate housecleaning, but reading how Evangeline "made-do" with the meager supplies and accomadations she had while being so isolated with her daughter gave me a new perspective. I'm looking forward to the rest of this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Beginning..., February 1, 2004

I am looking forward to reading this entire series. The first book caught my attention. It is definitely a romance novel and nothing more. But, I love romance novels! It is the story of a widow and her daughter making the trek West to meet her new husband. Instead she meets the man she loves, but because she's not promised to him she can't have him. It's a sweet story and ends just how you want. Not too stressful, but a fun read!

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER WINNER, May 16, 2007
This review is from: Springwater (Paperback)
I find that when Miller writes a series the first is ALWAYS the best. This story is wonderful! There is very little going on in this book but the relationship between the two main charectors. Very little substory lines. Just these two stuck together in a cabin TRYING NOT TO FALL IN LOVE for 6 monthsI! I LOVED IT! GREAT WRITING! THE SPRINGWATER SEASONS are good also, but a bit rushed and way too short, But Enjoyable all the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very tender, loving story with wonderful characters, February 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Springwater (Paperback)
The book began a bit slowly, but even at first I really liked the two characters, Evangeline and Scully. Not only is their self discipline tested, but also the elements try them. But true love and devotion prevail. I was sorry to come to the end of the book and look forward to reading Rachael, the next book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking????, October 9, 2009

This review is from: Springwater (Paperback)
Somebody please tell me what is so breathtaking about this "breathtaking beginning of a new series" because I missed it. I had to wonder what editor, agent, or publisher is going to read this and get excited about it. There are some really great authors out there who have written some really crappy junk and I suspect that when something like this is presented to be published, it is done so regardless of whether it's worthy of the paper it's printed on simply because the author is popular enough that the book will make money anyway, which irritates people like me who have spent $7.00 on a book that's so boring I can barely manage to read the thing. I've seen this with a great many good authors; they come out with one you can't put down and the next one is so ridiculously boring you have to wonder if it was written by the same author. When I read LLM, I expect to get my money's worth.

Evangline, a widow, and her daughter, move west to Springwater where Evangline will marry her deceased's cousin. When they arrive, they find the cousin, Big John, has gone away for the winter but his buddy and business partner, Scully, is there to greet them and will look after them until spring when Big John returns. Pretty much the entire winter is chronicled, day after boring day of--

They ate breakfast, fried eggs, juicy slices of pork and thick slices of toasted bread. Then Scully put on his coat and went to do chores. Evangline washed the dishes and then worked on the socks she was knitting for Scully in secret. Then he came back in and hung his coat on the peg. Evangline hid the socks and busied herself preparing the noonday meal, trout fried in flour, a jar of beans and thick slices of bread. Then Scully milked the bawling cow while Evangline sewed her daughter's dress. Then, after a light supper of pinto beans and cornmeal, of which she made enough for two days, Evangline tucked her daughter into bed, ran into the chilly lean-to with her nightclothes and changed quickly into them. And then, she dove beneath the covers of her bed. It felt like a frozen pond and she wiggled for ten minutes to get warm. And then she fell asleep.

The next day, it begins again. There was nothing but sheer force of will that kept me turning the pages and the thing read pretty much like a Dick and Jane book. Nothing exciting happened, the plot was basically non-existent, the dialogue boring, and the book even had the lackluster ending I predicted it would have. The sex, as seems to be par for the course anymore with LLM's characters, was a wild, sweaty mating and the heroine was, once again, transformed into a howling "she-wolf", as has happened in some of her other books. I get that LLM wants her heroines to be prim and proper out of bed, and uninhibited in bed, but these scenes border on the corny. There's a sexier way to write sex scenes instead of having the woman flinging herself wildly at the man and howling like a she-wolf in heat.

I'm reading Rachel now, although why, I'm not sure. I skimmed to the back to see if she would turn into a frenzied she-wolf too, but thankfully, she didn't. She just scratched her fingernails up and down Trey's back.

I like LLM, and some of her books are my favorites, but some of them aren't worth the paper they're written on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, March 27, 2006
This review is from: Springwater (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. Classic historical romance. Lots of refernces to the cooking of teh period which I enjoy. Its a fast read cover to cover. I felt the chemistry between Scully and Eve immediately and I could feel my worries for them as I read on. I really enjoyed the relationship between Scully and Eve's daughter Abigail. Alot of times children arent fully developed charachters but I cant wait to read Abigail's story in the future.
