This review is from: Sprinkles' First Haircut (Blue's Clues (8x8 Paperback)) (Paperback)
"Sprinkles' First Haircut" is a cute, sweet story about Blue's little brother's first visit to the barber for a haircut (perhaps that should be "furcut?") In the story, Blue and Sprinkles are trying to read a book, but something isn't quite right -- Sprinkles is having trouble seeing it. Does he need glasses? No -- it's not that, it's just that his hair has grown such that it's covering his eyes! He looks rather like a sheepdog.
Blue is excited that her little brother is about to have his first haircut, and her playroom friends are excited too. Sprinkles, however, isn't so sure. He's worried about what's going to happen. Blue tells him that there's nothing to worry about when going to the barbershop. He also promises "I'd never let anything hurt my little brother." This book shows everything from sitting a in a barber's chair, to a "shampoo song" (very cute) to deciding on a hairstyle. It covers all the bases in a fun, relatable way. All in all, another wonderful addition to the "Blue's Clues" (though this is really more "Blue's Room") line of books.

This is a 23 page paperback book approximately 8X8 inches. Sprinkles can't see his book because his hair is covering his eyes. So blue says he needs a haircut but Sprinkles is afraid. Blue and Roar E. Saurus play dressup to show Sprinkles what a barber shop is like. Then they jump into a picture to visit a real barber shop. The barber is very kind and patient and Sprinkles fears are eased. Sprinkles gets a nice haircut and returns home to finish his book. My 3 yr old grandson is horrified by haircuts. He will let me read this book to him but is not overly impressed. But it has helped to open a dialogue about the subject.

My now 3-year-old has always been afraid to get his haircut. I had cut his hair myself until he was 2 when we took him in to get his hair cut by a professional. It was not fun! So we are back to cutting his hair at home and he is still afraid whenever a haircut is imminent.
That said, this book truly has helped to quell his fear, if only a little bit. It was very comforting to him to know that a character he knows and cares about (Sprinkles) could overcome his fear of haircuts. Sprinkles starts out very apprehensive of the whole situation, much like many children, and the book presents the idea to children in a playful, completely non-serious way. Though he still doesn't like getting his haircut, we talk about Sprinkles throughout the process and how brave he is being, just like Sprinkles! It really helps to calm him down. Definitely worth it for little ones with a phobia! |
