An SPSS Companion to Political Analysis introduces SPSS using actual political data, getting students to employ the tools of their methods course right away in the computer lab. With more than 110 screen shots, straightforward instructions, and customised data sets - for both students and full versions of SPSS - the workbook companion equips students to do real political science research and analysis. As part of this useful guide, a CD-ROM includes five different datasets: Two individual-level survey datasets (the 2000 US National Election Study and the 1998 US General Social Survey), two datasets containing aggregate-level variables (on the fifty US states and on 114 nations of the world), and a dataset that measures partisanship, voting behaviour, and ideology of members of the United States Senate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, easy to follow, October 7, 2008

Great textbook! Very easy to follow. Information is given in just the right quantity, not too repetitive to the point where it gets boring, but repetitive enough to help you remember. I have to admit that I enjoy the exercises in this book so much that I've actually worked ahead a few weeks in my data analysis class. Exercises are also very interesting and explore neat relationships.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to quantitative analysis, July 9, 2008
This book takes us step by step through many useful guided examples and makes sure to stop and briefly explain concepts along the way. The topics and instructions are helpful for getting comfortable using SPSS (and many of the most commonly employed statistical tests are included in the chapters). By the end of this book, you feel confident enough to strike out and perform your own quantitative analyses. The conversational tone makes it much easier to grasp the concepts. SPSS is a good introduction to quantitative analysis, and this companion is an excellent introduction to SPSS.

5.0 out of 5 stars SPSS Companion, November 25, 2007
This is an excellent walk-through of how to use all the basic features of SPSS, with good explanations about what the outputs mean. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a beginning and basic knowledge of how to use SPSS.
