5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar in all respects., January 3, 2005

Kremens' debut album proves the age-old idea that creativity starts with good ideas. Consistenly throughout this release, he is able to develop solid, catchy musical hooks into classic compositions. The melodic writing is for the most part seamless and in some cases timeless (e.g. "Couldn't Love You More than This"). Overall it is an extremely refreshing listen in a world of derivative, banal, over-corporatized, emotionless drivel that pervades the pop/rock music scene these days (although lately there has been some hope that the craft of songwriting will return). To boot, the album is immaculately arranged and produced, sonically as interesting as it is compositionally. It is nice to see that in a world where there are so many songs that consist of one bar's material looped for 3.5 minutes, there are some artists which can still write a bridge and surprise you with an interesting chord change along the way.

The sign of a great recording - it keeps spinning. Spun has played nearly daily since I got my own copy. Jim Kremens demonstrates an inspired songwriting ability paired with deep vocal delivery. The majority of the instrumentation is simple and conveys timeless messages. He delivers the ulimate love song with "I Couldn't Love You More Than This" which will certainly earn a spot in the eternal wedding day playlist. "Ordinary Day" sounds like a Dylan-shaped life lesson. He carries a heavy Beatles influence and one might think "Macchu Picchu" was accidently left off Sgt Pepper's. "This is the Place" delivers a message of happiness we all wish to feel.
I have introduced Jim Kremens' music to two other people so far and both have succumbed to a similar addiction. One is an editor for an indie music magazine. Even with all the music she finds she told me she couldn't stop playing Spun. Highly recommended.
