More About the Author

Kelly, of, began to study nutrition in 2004 when her girls were very young. Her daughter, Ashley, was a baby and Zoe was a toddler at that time. Both girls were not well. Her naturopathic doctor worked with them to radically change their diet by removing gluten, casein, and sugar. Kelly and her husband soon realized that their own health problems could be resolved as well. It was very eye-opening to see how many kinds of issues could be treated with the diet. So, after years of research and experimentation, Kelly now creates food so similar to conventional wheat/dairy/sugar recipes that no one feels deprived. Together, through diet and biomedical treatments, their family is overcoming celiac disease, gluten-intolerance, ADD, and autism with great success. Kelly lives in Southern California with her husband and three daughters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unreal recipes! January 28, 2011
This is a gorgeous little cookbook with photos for most recipes, and easy to follow instructions. And though it doesn't say it in the title (that would probably get pretty wordy), the recipes are all free of refined sugars too, and lower in sugar overall than your average recipes. A definite goldmine for our sweets-loving household.

My husband is allergic to eggs, so this does limit the number or recipes I could try directly from the book without alterations. I would say that a little over half of the recipes call for eggs, but some don't ... and those my friends, are true gems. (The author notes "egg-free" right next to the title, so helpful!)

The first recipe I made from this cookbook was the Red Rock Rolls (onion/oregano version), and then I moved onto the Cinnamon Raisin Bagels. Both recipes were amazingly delicious (the dough alone is addictive), and have become repeats each week in our house since my husband thankfully loves them (so low in sugar and they take care of his mid-day sweets cravings!).

I can't wait to enjoy the rest of the recipes, as the results are spot on, and the author really knows how to add flavor. This cookbook is a true must for anyone wanting to dabble in grain-free baking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great cookbook by Kelly Brozyna!! February 4, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I purchased Kelly's first cookbook, The Spunky Coconut, about a year or so ago. That book is amazing and I follow her blog and love her recipes, so I knew I would love this cookbook as well. This book is a wonderful resource for anyone who has cut out gluten and casein but doesn't want to replace those things with junk flours and processed milk replacement products.

Honestly, I wish I could give this 4.5 stars but since that is not an option, 4 it is. The only reason I do not give this book 5 stars is due to the price. When I purchased the first cookbook, it was explained to me that the high price is because Kelly and her husband have to pay to have their books published. While I understand that, I wish there was a way to bring down the price. With that said, I will continue to buy any future cookbooks written by Kelly at nearly any price (within reason!) - they are that good!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 2nd Cookbook June 30, 2011
I have had Kelly's first book for quite a long time and eagerly awaited the publication of her second one. I follow her blog and have tried many recipes from both cookbooks as well as from her blog. I love that her recipes use clean, minimally processed, healthy ingredients all while being gluten free, casein free and refined sugar free! I share what I make with many people who do not follow these diets and they are always surprised to hear what the ingredients are! I have read some of the other reviews and wanted to respond to the one who hasn't tried many of the recipes because of unusual ingredients that are sometimes difficult to find. I agree that some can be difficult and sometimes expensive to buy, however, my experience has been that in most of these cases these ingredients do tend to last for many recipes and a lot of her recipes use the same ingredients so once you have them in stock you are opened up to a lot of recipes. Coconut flour, for example, is used in surprisingly small amounts in recipes due to it's properties and ability to absorb a lot of liquid. Also, I've found that while Kelly's recipes require somewhat more expensive ingredients, in my opinion the ingredients are of higher quality and contain more nutrients that some of the cheaper, easier to find ingredients.

Ultimately, I think both of Kelly's books are fantastic and are well worth it! I use them frequently and recommend them all the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taught me A LOT! December 27, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
People who do the gluten/casein free diet for a reason and not just cause it's the it thing right now, my hats off to u because I am exhausted! My son now three has been on the diet for a year because he was diagnosed with autism. My world as I knew it came crumbling down - I took a few days to breakdown & then I got to work researching EVERYTHING! I came across the gfcf diet & Spunky Coconut she is my hero. When u first start u are intially shot down by friends and family that just don't understand why or mostly have a problem with change and thinking outside the bread box. Even with all of my son's improvement in eye contact, he learned to sign & he can read & spell words up to 6 letters, I still have freinds & family fight me on it. But my husband, son & I are all on the diet thanks to this cookbook that has shown me how to think outside the box. I know so much about seeds, nuts, beans and put them all in my desserts, breads & everyday food! What?! I know but its good & good for you. I have every cookbook of hers & am on her blog constantly. Because of Spunky Coconut I have learned so much & started making my own recipes without being scared. My son is the smartest & best behaved child in his autism class & for that I am thankful!

I love this cookbook! Now some of the recipes are lengthy but once I got in the groove I can knock them out! I absolutely love
and make often the pumpkin spice cake! The texture is wonderful and I often eat it for breakfast. The recipes are for baked goods but
they are loaded with nutritious ingredients-who doesn't like cake for breakfast?
