Matt Perman, NINE BOOKS ON LEADERSHIP (The Gospel Coalition)
2. Spurgeon on Leadership, Larry Michael
A highly readable and very insightful primer on leadership based on the fundamentals of how Spurgeon led. It therefore has the best of both worlds: it covers the main areas of leadership from an explicitly Christian perspective. This book covers a lot of helpful ground, from competence and confidence to calling and character; casting vision and building commitment to leading with creativity and compassion. It also covers leading despite criticism and conflict and dealing with illness and depression--looking at all these things from the lens of how Spurgeon led.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Review
I highly recommend this book to all serious students of leadership! (John C. Maxwell Founder of the INJOY Group)

I'm thrilled that Larry Michael's wonderful and insightful new book will introduce a new generation to Spurgeon's model of leadership. (Pastor Rick Warren Author of Purpose Driven Life)

Pastors should have [this book] on their shelves, but more importantly, in their hands to read. (MARBC Messenger)

This is an outstanding work that should be read...by every pastor and those who aspire to spiritual leadership. It is one of the most outstanding contributions to the literature of spiritual leadership. (Narnia3.com/review )

"Michael's work is a more thorough examination of the outworking of Spurgeon's practical leadership philosophy and practice. This reviewer cannot recommend it highly enough." (Dennis M. Swanson The Master's Seminary Journal )

"Here is a welcomed relief from the CEO style of pastoral leadership popular in our day. Spurgeon...will insist that you live in the trenches, bear the burdens of your people, preach from the pew, and pay the price for a ministry that is not compromised by the winds of the times." (Richard L. Dresselhaus, D. Min. Enrichment )

"Spurgeon's leadership (is) examined in 12 chapters with helpful summaries at the end of each chapter. What follows will be a series that highlights the insights of what Michael discovered in his study of this great servant... I was blessed.  I pray you will be as well!" (Danny Akin blog, President, SEBTS, betweenthetimes.com)

More About the Author

How relevant is Charles Haddon Spurgeon in the 21st century? Dr. Larry Michael believes that the principles of leadership that characterized "The Prince of Preachers" are instructive for pastors and Christian leaders today. Michael'a aim is to convey the passion for leadership that Spurgeon exhibited throughout his ministry as the first mega-church pastor in Victorian England.

Michael's earlier interest in studying Spurgeon culminated in a Ph.D. dissertation titled "The Effects of Controversy on the Evangelistic Ministry of C. H. Spurgeon" (The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, unpublished, 1989). Later, Spurgeon scholar Dr. Lewis Drummond and Dr. Michael co-taught courses on Spurgeon at Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, Alabama.

The idea for "Spurgeon on Leadership" emanated from a master's level course, and was written over a three-year period of extensive research and study. Upon its first publication, the book was translated into Korean as well as being published in Nigeria. Now in its Updated Edition, "Spurgeon on Leadership" continues to inspire leaders to rise to their God-given potential in these challenging times.

Having served churches in England and the United States, Larry Michael draws from a wealth of pastoral experience. He is one of three generations of pastors, and is excited to see a new cadre of younger leaders carry the torch of biblical leadership forward in the spirit of Charles Spurgeon.
