Book Description

Mad August 11, 2009
Don't Go Stir Crazy!
Break Out of the Doldrums!

Danger! Intrigue! Stupidity! locks up a collection of crazy clashes between those two bumbling MAD Spies!

"Spy vs. Spy" was the brainchild of Cuban-born political cartoonist Antonio Prohias, who fled his country after receiving death threats from Fidel Castro. Prohias settled in America, and in 1960 he began a 26-year run of Spy misadventures in MAD Magazine. This book by Prohias, long out of print, showcases his genius as an artist, storyteller, and graphic designer.

About the Author

Antonio Prohias was an award-winning and influential political cartoonist in Cuba. Once Castro seized control of the free press, Prohias fled from Havana and settled in America. Soon he presented a “captivating cartoon of a friendly rivalry” to MAD Magazine. It has gone on to become one of the magazine’s best-loved features. He died in 1998.

This is a reprint of The All New Mad Secret File On Spy vs Spy (i.e. the first book). Not necessarily a bad thing, but if you already have the old book, this one doesn't add anything new to your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book from the Cold War Era, October 14, 2009
This review is from: Spy vs Spy Danger! Intrigue! Stupidity! (Mad) (Paperback)
Prohias, a Cuban refugee who became really unpopular with Fidel, was a genius and his cartoons reflect this. This book has material in it I haven't seen in ages and it is a fun collection, with a piece that brings the whole book together in the end. Well worth it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Typical Spy vs. Spy, May 11, 2011

You probably know Spy vs. Spy. This is a compedium of some of those comics. If you aren't familiar with the series, think of it as the comic strip style violence of Tom and Jerry with spies substituted for the cat and mouse. Sometimes, the black spy wins, sometimes the white. Occasionally, they throw in a woman spy too. She generally wins.

A few strips will might make you laugh or at least admire the creativity. I give it 4 stars for being just what it is; a whole bunch of Spy vs. Spy comics. You could easily argue that that doesn't deserve 4 stars, but I figure people wouldn't buy this if they weren't already familiar with Spy vs. Spy.

My son was interested because he saw the short comics on Mad TV.
