3.0 out of 5 stars The Legacy continues, but is that a good thing? October 23, 2012
By Kwing

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Spy Hunter for the Nintendo 3DS features slick cars, intense Action and an Insane difficulty that will make even 007 sweat! Hard to believe it's been 30 yrs since the first Spy Hunter title. Anyway, Spy Hunter pretty much combines all of the past games into one and the Interceptor still transforms for Sea and Off-road combat. New to the series is your handy dandy satellite and being able to defend your transport!

Controls aren't too bad, except when you get fishtailed. Players can select between 4 weapons and switch between them on the fly. PLUS while refueling, you can replace weapons too. Missions vary from avoiding the Police, Scanning stuff and blasting lots of bad guys. After beating a level you're earned points are used to upgrade your Car or unlock new paint jobs!

Lasting appeal for this game is pretty good. All the stages can be re-played at anytime and there are achievements too. However; this game is very challenging and not for those lacking skill. After all this is the Classic Arcade game reborn. Personally this game isn't bad... just I'm not too thrilled with the price. So you might want to wait for the price to drop abit. Visuals are Ok I guess, but they look very early PS2 if you ask me.

Still, unlike the Vita ver. Spy Hunter on the 3DS doesn't suffer from constant lag and pixelation! That and the game is super fun and simple to pick up and play. Thanks in part to the games control mechanic and Touch Screen. So If you like racing combat games, why not pick up Spy Hunter? If that's not your thing and you aren't the best at tough games, this game isn't for you. As for you older Spy Hunter fans, I am happy to say this game is "The Rock" free and a blast to play!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hunting for control February 27, 2013
Platform for Display:Nintendo 3DS
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
This is not a great game, but it is fun nonetheless. I had to wait until quite recently to be able to pick this game up for less than 20 USD, as this is definitely not worth full price, unless you are desparate for a racing game or a fan of the classic game. However since this is a 3D game and follows the 'modern' behind the car perspective it isn't much like the old game. In fact I think it is a lot better, since despite a brutal difficulty initially (until you get used to the controls and have managed to upgrade all weapons and acquire a shield), it is beatable unlike the old game, which was just there to get you to feed one more coin.

It contains 23 missions and because most missions are in the 3-6 minute range, you might be excused to think that this game only takes 2-3 hours to finish. Well, that definitely is possible, but good luck with that. I may not be a very good gamer, but I do have a knack for racing games and I never beat a level on my first run through (occasionally embarrassingly needing 3-4 tries or more), mainly because of the many enemies that come at you all the time and the challenge of keeping the car going where it is supposed to. After beating a level you can replay it at any time to get achievements (within the time set, limited damage or by destroying a set number of enemies), but of course some may view this as artificially extending the game length. So I guess you are looking at perhaps 6-10 hours at least before truly beating the game and getting all the achievements (and upgrades). Yes, that is pretty short and after truly beating the game there is nothing left to do, no hard mode (sic) and no on-line except for streetpass. That is exactly the reason why this isn't worth 40 USD, 15-20 would be just right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenging & Addictive - Great Game January 31, 2014
By Tom
Platform for Display:Nintendo 3DS
I wasn't expecting much having bought this in a bargain bin at Five Below (which was also the price I paid). But, I was a fan of the original games so, at such a low price, I had to try it. I'm glad I did.

Lots of weapons to choose from. Customize your load out before missions. Fast & fun gameplay. I can't recommend it enough.

My only complaint is that the driving could be a little easier to control. maybe a little tighter. I find myself either turning too much or not enough sometimes. While that might sound like a big critique for a driving game, it's not as bad as it sound. It's a very "arcade-y" feeling kind of game; so, the controls actually work well. They could just be a little better.

I'm writing a review because I love this game and I feel like it's an underrated title that's going to be passed over. Don't pass it over. Get this game.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed June 30, 2014
By B. Yu
Platform for Display:Nintendo 3DS|Verified Purchase
Being a fan of the original many years ago, I really, really wanted to like this game and with the price down to about $10, I decided to take a chance. And the mostly positive reviews helped.

So while the game flows very smoothly, the story is good, what ruins this game are the poor controls, as I felt the car drifts too easily, accumulating damage, and being vulnerable to the enemies. Forget any Mario Kart precision, this will frustrate you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Challenging for a nine-year-old January 21, 2013
By Shopper
Platform for Display:Nintendo 3DS|Verified Purchase
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
My nine-year-old son, who is not a big gamer, says the game is fun, although he does find it challenging. There is a constant presence of snipers, helicopters, and C4s. In order to pass a mission, you have to destroy lots of enemies, sneak by their territories, and collect enemy data. It is quite difficult to destroy the enemy with your primary weapons like shocker, machine gun, flame thrower, and blind site ray. With points you collect along the way, you can then purchase secondary weapons like S.W.A.R.M. missiles, reverse grenades, lightning gun, and side shot. My son recommends this game for big time gamers and/or others who can take the challenge with a "can do" attitude and patience.
