There's certainly not much imagination in the I Spy books, but every parent knows that they are ideal material for getting a 2- or 3-year-old through a restaurant meal or a trip. Probably too simple for children older than 3, the puzzles in this board book have the usual two parts. On the left-hand pages are rhymed couplets ("I spy a spoon and a golden key / I spy a butterfly just for me!") paired with illustrative pictures of the objects named. On the right-hand side is a more complex picture containing the objects on the left, and the task at hand is to pick them out. The objects are simple, the photos are clear, and primary colors predominate. As always, there's extra mileage to be had in discussing the other objects in the pictures--even in making up stories about them. (Baby to preschool) --Richard Farr

More About the Author

Jean Marzollo was born and raised in Manchester, Connecticut.

She says, "As a child, I loved to read and sew dolls' clothes, one outfit after another. I am a graduate of Manchester High School, the University of Connecticut, and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. After working as a high school English teacher and editor of Scholastic's "Let's Find Out" kindergarten magazine with Carol Devine Carson for 20 years, I began writing children's books. I have written over 130 books, including the award-winning, best-selling I SPY series for children, written completely in rhythm and rhyme. Rhythm and rhyme are like music without the tune; they lure and excite the ear. Children love rhythm and rhyme, and so do I. Do you know that I SPY actually has the same rhythm as "Old Mother Hubbard" and also rap? I treasure the beautiful, intricate photographs by Walter Wick in the I SPY books. When I wrote the first I SPY book, I automatically thought of kindergarten children so everything that I called for was concrete, something a 5-year-old can find. The result is a hunting game that children and grownups can play together successfully. Sometimes children are better than their parents! In recent years I took up painting and have begun to illustrate my own "books on paper" and "books online." You can see them on my website: jeanmarzollo.com. My 18 month old would read no other books than the I Spy series for a whole week! They have shown him in a simple way the association between words and pictures. He adores them!

Even though several of the reviews say that these books are too young for any child over the age of 3, I disagree.

We have 3 of these books (this one, I Spy Wheels, I Spy Letters) and my son, age 5, is still enjoying them, but in just a different way. We now play "I Spy" the traditional way with..."I Spy something that is yellow and floats." And then I have to guess what he is talking about (i.e. boat). And then I do the same. We continue until we have described everything in each of the pages. Yes, it takes a long time to go through the books, but it is so wonderful for his critical thinking skills.

Any now my 21 month old daughter gets to enjoy these books. They just don't wear out! One of the best gifts around!!

When I ordered this book I thought it would be a little beyond my 18 month old's ability. I was amazed when she was able to find the hidden objects - and delighted in doing so! I can see where it will easily grow with her over the next year. This was more than a book - an interactive puzzle!
