Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

"I spy a great big yellow two,/ a pair of scissors,/ and a button that's blue." Preschoolers adore perusing A Drop of Water creator Walter Wick's crisp, colorful photographs to find objects, and in I Spy Little Numbers, they'll develop number identification and counting skills while they're at it. On the number five spread, children will find not only the three main objects (an airplane with five windows, a soccer ball made up of pentagons, and a five-wheeled choo-choo train), but five-pointed sea stars, a nickel, a pea pod with five peas, and more. Other sturdy board books in the interactive I Spy Little Book series include I Spy Little Book, I Spy Little Wheels, and I Spy Little Animals. (Baby to preschool)

More About the Author

Jean Marzollo was born and raised in Manchester, Connecticut.

She says, "As a child, I loved to read and sew dolls' clothes, one outfit after another. I am a graduate of Manchester High School, the University of Connecticut, and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. After working as a high school English teacher and editor of Scholastic's "Let's Find Out" kindergarten magazine with Carol Devine Carson for 20 years, I began writing children's books. I have written over 130 books, including the award-winning, best-selling I SPY series for children, written completely in rhythm and rhyme. Rhythm and rhyme are like music without the tune; they lure and excite the ear. Children love rhythm and rhyme, and so do I. Do you know that I SPY actually has the same rhythm as "Old Mother Hubbard" and also rap? I treasure the beautiful, intricate photographs by Walter Wick in the I SPY books. When I wrote the first I SPY book, I automatically thought of kindergarten children so everything that I called for was concrete, something a 5-year-old can find. The result is a hunting game that children and grownups can play together successfully. Sometimes children are better than their parents! In recent years I took up painting and have begun to illustrate my own "books on paper" and "books online." You can see them on my website: jeanmarzollo.com. Writing and illustrating picture books today is as much fun as sewing dolls' clothes was when I was in third grade. As soon as I'm done with one book, I'm happily compelled to start the next."

Jean Marzollo lives in Upstate New York.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long shelf life, March 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: I Spy Little Numbers (Board book)
I have two boys, 15 months old and 3 1/2 years old, and both love this book. My 15-month old not only begs me to read it to him, but is starting to learn to identify numbers (and many other objects) from it. My 3 1/2-year-old likes it on a different level, to "spy" the objects. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining little book for learning numbers., June 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: I Spy Little Numbers (Board book)
Learning numbers becomes a fun activity with this book. Every page has many colorful items to search for which will capture the interest of a child for a long time. My two year old daughter greatly enjoys reading this book over and over again. The book is also popular with older children due to its fascinating pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Light Rhymes & Bright Colors = Mighty Combinations !, December 30, 2006

"I SPY" inspires fun for all ages; this time around it will be the perfect gift for a little boy who has a new brother. He can "read" all kinds of stories about the brightly colored objects, and memorize the rhymes as well as help the baby learn numbers. Sharing is important for a boy with a dad in Iraq and a new baby demanding attention.

The "I SPY" books remind many mothers of the Girl Scouts' "Kim's Game" and the tradition of FUN & IMAGINATION lives on. The more fully & enthusiastically parents participate in their children's learning, the greater the benefits to the entire family. These books offer chances for all senses to be used. And the unexpected, unscripted sharings from children open the curtains for moms & dads on new perceptions of abilities & personalities.

What a pay-off! We can't afford for learning to wait for kindergarten years. Encourage kids to share their books whenever & however they can.
