Book Description

November 1999
Los Alamos, New Mexico, late November/early December 1999. The 1945 pact generates deadly fallout in the here and now -- murders, spying, blackmail and greed. A Spy Within by Lynnette Baughman tells the tale. While researching a book on the Trinity Project, Los Alamos residents Rose Hulle and Patrice Kelsey discover the "Last Man Bottle" legend and grow curious about a 1945 spy, code-named "Perseus." One night Rose and Patrice meet with one of the "Last Man Bottle" survivors, now in a nursing home. The Trinity survivor describes the "Last Man Bottle" pact and reveals crucial information about spies who sent
Russia bomb-building secrets.

All three are set in northwest Montana.
When she's not writing and reading, she likes to ski. Favorite ski areas are Park City Mountain Resort (Utah), Vail (Colorado), and Big Sky Mountain Resort (Montana). In 2011 she and her husband, Bill, are going to ski Whitefish Mountain, MT, for the first time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Never A Dull Moment!, December 4, 1999
By A Customer

While the jacket blurb was interesting, I had no idea this would be such a smooth, fast read -- hard to put down! You really get to know Patrice, the main character. She talks a lot and you are with her constantly. The author makes a couple of interesting choices about what Patrice will (or will not) do, and by the end of the book you are more than ready to read another one -- not available yet, sad to say. You don't need to be a Los Alamos history buff to enjoy the plot, but you will learn something along the way despite yourself. Put it on your gift list!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid first effort by Ms. Baughman., December 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: A Spy Within (Paperback)
Though the Cold War's over, there's still A SPY WITHIN in the atomic bomb's hometown of Los Alamos, New Mexico. An old man's tales of a Russian spy in the midst of the bomb's creators leads to murder and intrigue, as a newspaperwoman hunts for the truth behind the web of secrecy and lies. Get a cup of hot tea and curl up by the fire with this one. But be prepared to stay up reading long after the embers have died.

4.0 out of 5 stars Up All Night!, November 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: A Spy Within (Paperback)
I'd only planned to read a few chapters, but this book was such a page-turner! I lay awake in bed thinking about the characters and what was going to happen next until I finally just had to get up and READ THE REST! That night! Well, I sure hope Lynnette Baughman's got another one on the way because I CAN'T WAIT to hear what happens next in Patrice Kelsey's (that's the main character's name) life as a reporter in "the Atomic City". This book is so full of details and facts about atomic espionage--yet it grabs you and pulls you in! And doesn't let you go until the next morning! I loved it and I recommend it to everyone who loves a good mystery.
