Book Description

Young Adult Fantasy.
(Ages 12-16)

Welcome to the game…
For generations, the capital city of Cerf Daine has been terrorized by a group of slinking criminal masterminds known as the Spykin. Operating from a secret headquarters, they strike whenever the danger is greatest, playing genius dark games for the simple thrill of it.
But recent times have seen their kind dwindle away, as the folly of their obsession with danger demands its price. One by one, they have all been caught.
All except Clevwrith, and he is determined to carry on the Spykin’s legacy.
By taking on an apprentice, he intends to mold a creature equal to himself, another that can never be caught. This requires that he teach his apprentice everything he knows, disclosing all of his deepest, darkest secrets.
But everyone has secrets of their own. And when you teach a stranger to play dark games without rules, the next move can come in any shape or form.
…Rules are forbidden.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful new discovery . . . September 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found this book the other day while browsing the kindle fantasy section and I'm glad I picked it up. The characters are endearing while keeping their distance at the same time; staying among the shadows and just out of reach.

'Spychild' is the story of the Master of Shadows, Clevwrith, and his apprentince-by-chance Despiris. Clevwrith takes Despiris under his wing and teaches her everything he knows, but when Despiris is captured, a different world and new experiences are offered to her.

I really liked the characters in this book, especially because they so often seem to be fighting their inner demons as much as those who oppose them in the real world. This first book is told more from Despiris' point of view; her gratitude for Clevwrith's care and education in the ways of the spychildren, but also her struggle to decide where she wants her life to take her. I immediately purchased the second book in this series and hope it will prove to be just as intriguing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent! December 4, 2008
Format:Kindle Edition
Spychild has everything you could ask for in a book.
Memorable characters, and intricate plot, plenty of intrigue and the depth that some books don't have.

Harper Alexander really draws you into the story and makes you feel as if you know the characters. When they feel sad, so do you. If they are happy, you are too.

I wished that the book could go on longer, but there is still a sequel to look forward to!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good concept, but obscure plot. May 1, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the concept, but after the introduction to the characters, the plot and direction they took was difficult to follow and had a no conclusion.

More About the Author

Harper Alexander is the author of young adult, fantasy, paranormal romance and dystopian novels, as well as the occasional short story when there isn't time to make everything into a full-fledged book or series. She lives in paradise (San Diego, CA) with her feline companion Moo, and the more questionable voices that whisper to her on a daily basis. In another life, she would have loved to explore a career as a horse-back stunt double, supported by a past as a competitive gymnast and her lifelong love affair with horses. She danced as a Spanish Dancer in "Ramona" (California's longest-running, official outdoor state play) for 8 years. Some of her favorite authors include Laini Taylor, Dawn Cook, Patrick Rothfuss, Kristen Britain, and Cornelia Funke. She is currently hard at work on half a dozen sequels and half a million new ideas. Some of her favorite obsessions aside from books include peacocks, dandelion seeds, gargoyles, watercolor tattoos, and thrift store shopping.
