Inspired by a design from part-time knifemaker Joe Maddox, Spyderco unveils The Maddox. Joe Maddox answered the call to design a fixed-blade for a friend who had broken his arm and was facing several months in a cast with the use of only one hand. Palm-sized and just 6 1/4" in total length, it resembles a small, long handled adaptation of an Alaskan ulu. The curved blade is 2 inches of PlainEdged, hollow-ground 440C stainless steel that flares on either side creating two sharp tips. This arc shape allows the user to make rocking cuts with the curved cutting edge and penetrating cuts with the two sharpened tips. Housing a full-length Tang, the handle is wine-colored wood epoxy laminate. Expanded into a finger Choil just above the blade (on both sides) it stops the hand from slipping onto the blade while a flare at the butt-end keeps the knife from slipping out of the hand. Along the back end of the handle is a flattened pommel that positions the thumb for a rocking cut, perfect for chopping and food preparation. Larger than the blade, the handle allows lots of gripping options and offers the type of cutting control found in a scalpel. The Maddox snaps one-handedly in/out of a Kydex safety sheath.
