4.0 out of 5 stars Good Idea, bad execution
I bought this to replace my Leatherman Wave. While it does work much better than my Leatherman it needs some fine tuning. The plier jaws don't touch there is a 1/8th inch gap. There is no wire cutter. The Crescent wrench is loose. The Driver holder is loose. The slip joint connection need to be rotated so that it doesn't lock up all the time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea but needs improvement
When I saw this I thought it looked very cool and when I bought it I was not disappointed. But, when I went to use it I found some flaws. 1. The jaws on the slip joint pliers are too rounded at the edges. They would work pretty good for nuts and bolts but I was unable to pull staples out of a 2x4 with them. 2. The pliers are also really awkward to use one handed. 3...

3. The knife handle is very unsubstantial when separated from the other half of the tool so if you're having to bear down or do any heavy cutting you have to leave the unit together which would be ok except for 4. when using the knife the plier handles kept wanting to open. There is a mechanism in place to lock the unit closed (for putting it in your pocket and for using the knife blade) but it was unreliable. sometimes the tool would open while I was using the knife and sometimes the locking mechanism would jam and I couldn't get the unit to close fully. After using it for a couple of days I went back to carrying my Leatherman Wave.

There is no wire cutter. The Crescent wrench is loose. The Driver holder is loose. The slip joint connection need to be rotated so that it doesn't lock up all the time.

Still it has a Crescent wrench which nothing else does. it uses standard driver bits giving it great versatility. It does not need a seperate bit holder like everything else does. the knife is an actual usefull knife unlike my leatherman which is more like a letter opener.

I will keep using it until spyderco corrects the flaws when i will get a new one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but won't replace real tools, August 6, 2009
This review is from: Spyderco ByrdRench Plain Multi-Tool (Sports)
A very good multi-tool for those who never have the tools on hand or are tired of walking to the tool box. All of the tools work well, but they do not work quite as well as to replace real tools. The slip joint pliers do close all the way, but the second slot was a little stiff, and the first slot a little loose, making some simple tasks take a bit longer. The screwdriver feels very awkward. It will get the job done, but it is not easy to undo long screws due to the difficulty of turning a long, flat object multiple revolutions. Overall, it works great for a multi-tool, but don't expect too much from it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow-factor tool, doesn't replace Leatherman Wave, July 11, 2008

I got one immediately after seeing it in a blog. It's one of those tools that makes every guy go WOW! and ask to hold it. Great idea, but the company's lack of experience in building pocketable tools is fairly obvious. It's just not perfect, the way Leaterman tools are. There's a need of improvement here and there. Still, highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars ByrdRench review, December 28, 2011

Conceptually I really liked the idea of this tool. However upon actual physical contact with it the first things out of my mouth was how heavy it is and how when you open it, it comes apart. Yes I know it's supposed to come apart to make other tools but if you are not careful the blade will fall to the floor. Hopefully you are not barefoot if it does!

Getting the bits out to use in the driver was also way to difficult. That could be something that would wear in with time but I need a tool to work NOW, not weeks or months from now.

Nice concept, just doesn't deliver for my purposes.

I LOVE Amazon's easy return policy. I sent it back and purchased another Leatherman from Amazon instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars A needed tool, June 20, 2011

When I saw the advertisement, I knew I had to have one. The concept is good. Its a welcome change from the standard multi tool. It does a great job when you need two tools, and two hands. There are some minor changes and small tune ups that should be made to the tool. But overall, its a great tool and does a good job. I recommend it to anybody that has an interest and a need for a multi tool and pocket tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well made tool that is easy to grab and go ---, March 30, 2011
This review is from: Spyderco ByrdRench Plain Multi-Tool (Sports)
When I first saw the Spyderco ByrdRench I knew I had to get it. It has a vaguely Spyderco feel to it and that's saying alot already. If you know Spyderco the build and finish are going to be dead on, and although this is from the part of Spyderco that is branded Byrd, it still has the quality that you can expect from it's parent company. THe tools are simple enough to access and use after playing around with it a few times and the tool lends a solid peace of mind knowing that I can be ready for most things that come my way If you do not like to wear your tools on your belt or clipped to your clothes (like me) you will probably just toss it into your bag. The case it comes with is fine for wearing on a belt, but again, this solid tool is not pocketable in any sense of the word. A fine tool to have at the ready whenever the situation calls for it. Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars ByrdRench multi tool, February 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Spyderco ByrdRench Plain Multi-Tool (Sports)
Good tool that is accurately described. All the functions work as advertised. The only disappointed was that the tool is actually made by ByrdRench and then imported by Spyderco, it is not a Spyderco product. I probably did not do enough research. That withstanding the tool works well and is welcome departure from the standard plier multi tools.
