if you carry a knife as a backup weapon not for opening boxes etc. then this is for you. i carry it along my waist for years now should god forbid i need to use it! this knife it thin, strong, lite and comfortable for evryday carry. it will save your life! it it crazy sharp! spend the money this knife is worth every penny!

I have had many many knives in my 65 years on this planet but not one came even close enough to be mentioned in the same breath as this one. I know one thing or sure, I will never be without one for the rest of my life.

This is a large, well....... weapon. Make no mistake, this knife is made for one thing. Go to the Spyderco web site and read it. Yes it CAN cut rope, but this is overkill if that's want you want. I really bought it as a unique knife for my collection. To carry the Civilian is for self defense. There is 100% no doubt in my mind that this knife will perform it's intended purpose well. I cut myself with the tip of the blade with hardly ANY pressure. I love it. It is def not an EDC. But I would trust it with my life.

Great design! This is the kind of knife that will either get you out of a pinch or into one (with LE ). I have several Spyderco knives in my collection and this is by far my favorite. I have large hands and this weapon opens fast and easy. Although not a knife you would want to carry all the time due to it's size,the Civilian is ideal for hikers or hunters who venture into the wilderness and may come across agressive wildlife. A forceful slash from this knife would stop just about any animal in its tracks. Not a toy, but an impressive piece of cutlery. Worth the price of ownership.

This knife is exactly what it says it is. Also, can be quite useful for cutting salami, opening envelopes, cutting red tape. Very expensive. Cool factor high. Could get three tools/weapons for same price of similar quality and function. Unnecessary. I could've taken a 20% restock, but became strangely attached to it. So . . . don't get drunk and look at it, cause you might buy it.

I bought this knife as a primary defense weapon, due to some unique circumstances. It will go through thick parkas or leather like you were opening up a zipper! This knife has a reverse "S" blade that is intended to be used like an oversized claw. It has a deep curve and full belly. The blade (VG-10 hollow-ground) comes fully serrated and wicked sharp. Because of its distinct features, it's not intended for EDC. It's a serious blade, in case you get into serious trouble.

This is a terrific knife commanding respect.
James Keating makes a mind blowing DVD specific to this type of knife's function, very enlightening.
You will need a T6 screwdriver to remove the clip if you're a lefty, well worth the Ace Hardware price of $3.50
We're talking heirloom cutlery here, it'll outlive you and your grandson will pass it along to his little one as well.
Oh and be very careful, like in a Stephen King novel, it will bite you if you're not completely respectful & focused.

This is exactly what I expected and more. The blade has such a wicked curve on it and it is extremely sharp overall. The handle and grip are superb, it fits perfectly in my hand and would serve well if needed for self-defense. Nice heft and balance. I read the other reviews before I bought this so I knew what to expect and am quite pleased with my purchase. This is an unusual knife in length and shape and is much different than any other in my collection of nearly 90 knives, and I feel it is well worth the price.

There is a disclaimer that comes with it that states it is not a utility knife and the warranty won't cover it if used as such. I understood this ahead of time after reading the other reviews, so this was not an issue at all for me. It is made in Japan with high quality VG 10 steel so you are not buying something that is cheaply made with questionable quality. Buy it before it goes up in price again!!! Also, it arrived in less time than advertised, in brand new and perfect condition, and the pouch that came with it is a nice touch.

I am an ex private eye, and when I was working I got into the habit of carrying items that might be helpful. I wish I'd had this thing, back then. This knife is bigger than it looks, and 10 times as scary. It is unbelievably sharp. I now carry it as a companion tool with my concealed .45 here in the wilderness of New Mexico. Never know when I might have to cut up a cactus, or a seat belt. Etc. I recommend this knife. I shall work it into my next thriller novel.

Everything about this knife is top notch. I can't emphasize how sharp this knife is out of the box. The handle is also of the highest quality and is easy to hold onto even if it gets wet. I can't say enough good things about this knife. I would say that this knife is for self defense primarily. The only other use I could see for it would be to cut someone out of a seatbelt or a rope entanglement situation.
