Why do knife companies apply animal-like names and descriptions to their knives?  In our defense, the Spyderco round hole and super sharp edge are reminiscent of eyes and claws. Think cats. Cats represent a highly developed level of predatory resourcefulness, sleek sharp claws and efficiency.  Our C129G Cat CLIPIT has a leaf-shaped 440C blade just under two-and-a-half inches in length that is flat-ground for hair popping sharpness. Our cat is unique. We aimed for a high pinnacle of cutting adeptness but demanded it be polished and sophisticated in appearance.  So, we combined cat-claw sharpness with a G-10 handle and Michael Walker LinerLock.  The black G-10 handle is shaped and sized ergonomically with full-length skeletonized liners inside for strength without bulky weight.  A deep silhouette wire clip burrows the knife down deeply in a pant's pocket with the tip facing up ready to carry left- or right-handed.  We believe the name is appropriate and think you might too.

I never used to be a knife-carrying guy. That changed when I spent some time in South Africa, but not for the reasons you'd expect.

I was given an all-black, all-metal Gerber folding knife as a gift from the manliest man in South Africa. When I returned to the States, I stuck it in my pocket, partially in his honor, and partially because it seemed like it might come in handy from time to time. Boy, did it! Within a day or two I had mastered the relatively simple art of pushing the blade out a bit with the thumb stud, then snapping my wrist to make the blade fly out and lock open with a satisfying sschhCLIK! Man, that was nice.

And the cutting! You know the old adage that when you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail? Well, when you carry a knife, you realize just how much you always needed one. Frustrating packaging? Knife. Need to cut off some herbs for dinner? Knife. Boxes won't fit in the recycling bin? Knife. Knife, knife, knife.

Unfortunately, the Gerber wasn't terribly well made. It was assembled with a half-dozen tiny, tiny Torx screws. And, in the space of two months, every single one of those screws completely unscrewed itself and fell out into my pocket. I was constantly losing screws and repairing it. The thing was heavy, too, and took up too much pocket space. And finally, it was so big that it made my gentle co-workers jump every time I opened the blade. No good.

So I put the Gerber away and set out on the search for the Perfect EDC, and this knife, the Spyderco Cat, is the knife I settled on.

Some might think of the Cat as a knife of compromise. It seems awkwardly positioned. It's sort of too big and curvy to be a "gentleman's" knife, but it's also too small to handle the demands of the heavy knife user.

Wow, what a fantastic small knife. About 3 years ago, I purchased my first Spyderco, a Sage 1. Since then, I've managed to accumulate 20+ Spyderco's altogether. Here's what I can say about the Cat as compared to other similar models:

For me, this is the "Goldilocks" size for EDC. Just right. It's the smallest handle knife that offers a great 4-finger grip. The Sage 1 with it's 3" blade and larger handle has gotten some odd looks when used. When using the choil on the Sage, the handle is just too big. It sticks out well past the end of my palm. Not using the choil, the blade edge ends up too far from your hand. Oh, and the Sage costs more than double. Sure, its got S30V and prettier scales, but at a price. That said, the Sage is probably the most similar knife to the cat.

The Chaparral is another knife that will draw comparison, but the Chaparral has a backlock instead of the liner lock. I prefer linerlocks for two reasons: First is speed of deployment. Sure, you can flick open a backlock, but it'll never be as smooth as a a good linerlock, framelock, or nested compression lock. Backlocks just aren't built for speed. Second is ease of one handed closing. I can close either with one hand. It's just a little easier with a liner lock. Less repositioning of the knife in your hand is required.

The Cat, Sage, and Chaparral all use the same excellent wire deep carry clip so that's a win all around.

The other knife this gets compared to is the Dragonfly 2. I own both the lightweight Dragonfly and the G10 Dragonfly. Dragonflys are great knives, but I still like the Cat better for 3 reasons. First, it' deeper carry.

It appears everyone who writes a review knows how to make a knife from scratch. They are experts on "blade grinds" & "centered blades" because they have watched a few reviews on YouTube.

I am not an expert. I own a Tenacious, Ambitious, Chicago had a Bug once & lost it, & i own this knife. (And a few Kershaws & Bucks, but I won't compare brands.)

I am a father of 3 little girls & a white collared business man who keeps a knife in his back pocket as a daily tool. I do not want people to feel intimidated when I pull out a knife, so I do not go for any other maker besides these 3 brands due to the designs.

The different Spyderco knives I own serve a different purpose, and they are as follows...

Tenacious - beefier blade good for yard work, construction projects, or day hike.
Ambitious - same as the Tenacious just smaller. The cheaper steel makes these knives more of a utility knife in my opinion.
Chicago - 2" blade. It's like the Cat, only it has a 2" blade. So that you do not get arrested in places where you cannot have over a 2" blade. I carry it often.
Cat - at about a 2 1/2" blade, I find this thing perfect as an EDC. Not too big, not too small.

The 440 steel keeps an edge a little longer than the Tenacious & Ambitious. One thing to keep in mind with these leaf shape blades is the longer you go on the blade, the larger the blade gets on every dimension. If I carry my Chicago or Cat for a week & switch to the Tenacious for some reason, I feel like it's a broadsword in comparison.

Overall, I like this knife for my daily dad uses...
