best pocket knife ever. My old one broke after ten years (my fault), this was a replacement. Incredibly sharp, wonderfully light.

I collect pocket knives. I have a collection of over 150 pocket knives. But for a general all around perfect knife to carry in your pocket you can't get a better knife than the Spyderco Dragonfly. I prefer the serrated edge for extra quick cutting, however, that is a personal choice. The Spydrco steel is incredible and of course the lock feature is a must. It is light weight, perfect for any purporse from cutting string to cutting boxes and stong and sharp enough to cut the seat belt if you had to...This is my second one and I'll never consider another pocket knife.

I lost my old AUS8 Dragonfly which was a great knife, surprisingly sharp and held its edge well. So I ordered this one thinking it would be an exact replacement. To my surprise the knife that arrived came with 2 upgrades. The one that arrived has the newer indent on the locking lever to make it less likely to unlock when gripping tight, unlike the knife pictured which does not. Also the big surprise is the knife is made out of a special steel, VG-10, made in Seki-City Japan, a huge quality improvement over the older AUS-8 which was more than adequate but this one is even better. Also the one I got has the laser engraved spyderbug on the blade unlike the one pictured. This is a premium knife, highly recommended.

Excellent EDC for Virginia Carry,

This knife is an excellent piece of engineering. It offers a fine balance of quality, price, edge retention and usability (defined by me as my ability to quickly and efficiently deploy the blade and control the overall knife in my hand).
I loathe not having a simple EDC (everyday carry) blade for opening the many packages and everyday items I come across including the occasional splinter extraction. As a medic-first responder, I appreciate the value of having an EDC blade available for emergency vehicle extractions - emergencies for which most citizens are simply unprepared. Several years ago, I observed a young boy caught on the escalator in Fairfax, Virginia. My heart sank as I was only feet away from the boy (as were many other adults) but none of us had a tool to cut his longer-than-necessary pants which were inextricably being eaten by the escalator teeth on the top landing. From that day onward, I carry an EDC for just such emergencies for which I voweed I would never face without proper preparation. Hence, the purchase of my Spyderco Dragonfly! In Virginia, one is allowed to carry any length of blade on a folder in the pocket or purse because the State has no blade size restrictions. However, people often forget that there is a blade size restriction for pocket knives in certain settings: Virginia Code § 18.2-308.1 provides an important and often overlooked restriction: If any person possesses any (i) stun weapon as defined in this section; (ii) knife, except a pocket knife having a folding metal blade of less than three inches; or (iii) weapon, including a weapon of like kind, designated in subsection A of § 18.2-308, other than a firearm; upon (a) the property of any public, private or religious elementary, middle or high school, including buildings and grounds; (b) that portion of any property open to the public and then exclusively used for school-sponsored functions or extracurricular activities while such functions or activities are taking place; or (c) any school bus owned or operated by any such school, he shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. As stated above, one cannot carry a folder with a blade length of 3 inches or above in any school. For parents of children such as myself, often in school picking up and dropping off my children, this is a concern. I always want to act within the bounds of the law - particularly as a former police officer. This 2 5/16" blade on the Spyderco Dragonfly fits the bill and is perfect size for daily chores. Unlike other smaller folder designs, the Spyderco has a wide blade profile. With the unique Spyderco hole and wide blade, the knife is easy to open with full control. The FRN handles have aggressive traction profile for confident handling. The action is smooth and unrestricted allowing for a nice "snap" at lockup. The thumb rest on the top of the blade provides a very nice rest point for the thumb and the ability to maneuver the blade for all cutting tasks. The VG-10 blade material is not the best for edge retention, but one must balance this with the $ point of the blade and the excellent rust/corrosion resistance of this material. Overall, the knife keeps a very nice edge with little effort. An occasional stropping of the blade on a leather strop after a few slides on a Spydero Triangle Sharpmaker and the blade shaves hair. Very pleased.

My favorite knife,

I bought mine 10 years ago at REI. If memory serves, I think I paid about $15 more for it than Amazon is currently asking. I would gladly buy this knife again if I ever lost my current one. What I like most is it's size and weight. Unlike my larger folding knife, I can comfortably carry this when wearing dress slacks without the weight being a problem. With a heavier knife, the weight of the knife causes my pocket to sag and draws attention to the fact that there's a knife there . Not that I'm trying to conceal it, I just don't like my pocket hanging down when I'm trying to dress professionally. This knife carries so well that I forget it's there ..... and that's my only complaint. Several times I've found it in the washer because I forgot to remove it from my pants pocket. It clips securely to my pocket and re-clips easily with one hand and no effort.
This is the only serrated knife I own, and I'm ambivalent about that part. If I were to purchase this one again I think I would opt for the straight edge. That's not a reflection on this knife or Spyderco, just my personal preference.

I went from a 20 year old Delica to this as I wanted something a little smaller and liked the superior blade material.
All and all I would say that I am happy with the knife but that is not to say it could not be better. The knife could use some type of rough surface at the base of the blade. I have a larger Spyderco that has this and it would really make this knife "stay in your hands" better. |
