This review is from: Spyderco Harpy Single Blade Folding Knife (Misc.)
Two decades ago I asked Andy Russell, founder of the Knife Collector's Club & a driving force behind the formation of the Custom Knifemakers Guild what blade he'd recommend for someone on the road in New York's Adirondack Mountains 500 - 600 miles/wk as well as being a rafting/boating enthusiast. He suggested the Harpy & over the past 20 years I've silently thanked him for his jugdment many times. The knife is reliable, handy, sturdy and @ 2 3/4" should be legal to carry in many normal situations. Owing to its unusual & somewhat intimidating appearance, prudence should be exercised when using it in public, however. To play it safe, check local laws when carrying it. When I was a clinical evaluator I learned "that the most restrictive regulations always prevail" so a word to the wise here should be sufficient. The Harpy's ability to cut jammed safety belts, ropes and ines is unsurpassed so just insert it under the belt or rope at a forty-five degree angle, then pull it back towards you. I suggest buying the serrated edge to maximize its cutting effectiveness.
The best testament could be from the buying public since of the 12+ knives of Spyderco's original line thirty years ago, only the Harpy (& Police) models are still being crafted & widely sold. The modern "rescue knives" with their inward curved blade seem modeled after Harpy's "hawksbill" design.

Combat Proven,
This review is from: Spyderco Harpy Single Blade Folding Knife (Misc.)
I have carried this knife every day for seven years to include two tours in Iraq as an infantryman and many weeks in the field training and it is still like new. I have used it on things that I thought would ruin it but it is still very sharp after all these years, I am even a bit afraid to re sharpen it because it's doing just fine and I don't want to ruin it. There is not a lose or broken part on this knife and I would recommend it to everyone especially my fellow soldiers. This knife is truly combat proven.

Beautiful Harpy,

The harpy is beautiful. Its super sharp, and pretty tough, doesnt dull easily at all, mine's still perfect. Cuts super easily through so many things for tough labor uses, or to use for simple tasks, like skinning fruit. Cleans in one second, doesn't rust, or get dirty. Easy to open, and close, comfortably concealable.

It's the sharpest knife I've ever seen! Even light pressure is enough to slice cleanly and accurately.
A few things make it a less than ideal carry knife: 1) It's rather scary looking! This knife provokes reactions when you take it out. 2) The shiny steel and the fact that it clip doesn't seat it deeply in your pocket means it's very visible. 3) Its actually illegal in NYC. I thought the under 3" and non-assisted opening was enough. I was told by a NYPD friend that ANY locking knife is illegal and carries at least a fine with it. Be advised, I've had to retire it to the home. That said, it's a quality purchase and I don't think I've ever picked up such a perfectly formed cutting tool. Would recommend to anyone.

Personal Defense,

This review is from: Spyderco Harpy Single Blade Folding Knife (Misc.)
I bought this knife for the sole purpose as giving it to my wife for a personal defense type weapon. The handle is small and the knife is easy to open quickly. The blade locks and can be unlocked very easily by my wife. The talon like blade is perfect as a slash and defensive/offensive weapon. This knife fits easily in her hand and she feels confident using it. She spent the first day cutting stuff just getting used to it. She likes the knife because it is shiny and I like it because it is viscious and the sharpness will remain. The blade is small enough for legal carry use and the clip makes it so. If you are looking for a self-defense knife for your significant other this would be a good choice.

All steel no plastic. Well made with quick opening and compact design. All the blade you need for daily use. The serrations are more like a saw, aggressive and sharp. Point down, clip stays in one place.Dont need to sharpen it after each use. Get a exacto razor if you want to clip coupons cause the Harpy is not made for that. It doesn't look like 'it', but it puntures and pierces very easily too.

This knife is great!! It is exactly how it is described in the ad. It is very sharp and has held an edge well. I have been impressed with how thin the handle of the knife is with it still being so sturdy. It fits well being clipped to the pocket of my pants or on my waist belt. This thing cuts through rope, line and most other things with such ease it is amazing how the shape of the blade helps to accomplish this. It can also be opened and closed very easily with one hand. I own four other Spyderco knives (one was stolen from my car) and they are also great. I would recommend knives from this company to anyone who wants a reliable sharp tool for life.

Great knife! I am amazed spyderco still makes such a specialized knife, but pleased to see it is top notch. I purchased one for me, then later one for my father and my boss. It is a nautical use knife by design, but between the three of us our harpy's have been used to open boxes, cut rope, open letters, and survive a mission trip to Africa. Although I don't think I would ever need it, it would make a perfect backup weapon in a jam. The stainless steel and curved Karambit-like blade is intimidating... and under 3" (legal for everyday carry in most states). I would highly recommend this knife. Note: It does have the extra hard spyderco metal blade that is painfully hard to sharpen, but works perfectly with the spyder edge.

I got it for my girlfriend(maybe a bad idea) but I want to get one now(not to protect myself from her)It is the best knife on the market(for utility uses) very very sharp and strong. To people that say "I wont spend that much on a knife" you really don't know what a real knife is. Yea all knives cut stuff but not like a harpy. I can slice a peice of paper clean with no effort and than cardboard the same. Hook shape perfect for rope to seatbelts. Small but in this case size doen't matter the best pocket knife any one could own.

Absolutly Superb!,
This review is from: Spyderco Harpy Single Blade Folding Knife (Misc.)
This knife is AMAZING. You can cut extremely thick ropes with one simple pulling motion. And, other customer, spyderco sharpens all of their knives for FREE. It is extremely quality VG-10 steel which kicks butt and does not rust and retains an extremely sharp edge. It is GREAT. Every time I pull it out to cut the tape on donuts or somthing people are always like WOW that looks just like a talon (it is) which is great for rope. BUY BUY BUY!!!
