Product Description

The concept of the Junior folder comes from Romanian Technical Manager Alexandru Diaconescu.  His young son was entering the curious-boy-years, ready and asking for his first pocketknife.  The request brought-up normal parental questions and concerns regarding knife safety and usability motivating Dionescu to create a folder with a prominent guard (choil) behind the blade's sharpened edge.  The guard maintains the hand in firm control over the blade while creating a block, effectively stopping fingers from sliding forward and connecting with the sharp edge.  And it's surprisingly comfortable in any sized hand- adult man, woman or juvenile.  Position of the guard in the G-10 handle leaves little room for a locking mechanism and a Spyderco Compression Lock is added for its compact components and impressive strength. Screw-together construction, an oversized lanyard hole and a deep pocket left- or right-handed tip-up wire clip further complement the handle.  The VG-10 blade is ground full-flat and offered PlainEdged for the best available cutting performance with non-skid jimping located on top of the spine behind the Spyderco Round Hole.

This is usually a bit more than I like to spend on a folder. But this one is worth it. Very sharp out of the box. Great blade shape. Nicely designed clip. Good cutting control and a nice "grip" behind the choil to keep your fingers safely away from the blade. It's kind of odd looking but very functional. It look a bit for me to get used to the frame lock on the spine but no big deal. I'd buy another without question.

This is a great knife, VG-10 steel, G-10 handles. Nice and thin for the pocket and perfectly balanced when opened. The recessed grip stops your hand from moving up the blade and provides excellent control.

This may cost way more than other spyderco knives, but the extra cost is warranted with the top notch materials and engineering that went into this design. You have to pay for quality.

Best new pocket knife of 2012, hands down..

By far my favorite knife and I've owned nearly 30 different folding knives. This knife works great for bigger jobs, camping food prep, firewood batoning and any other hard use you can throw at it. The huge choil is great, I feel much safer using this knife over anything else I've tried. Keep in mind that it's a very large blade and that it's not as useful for smaller tasks that require a more precise blade. I prefer a Delica4 for the smaller stuff.

By far this is my favorite EDC knife. I take it everywhere. holds an edge very well, I've had it for 3 months and use it fairly heavily and still hasn't needed to be sharpened. IT WILL RUST. If you take it out to a very damp area, keep it lubricated and cleaned. Since it was VG-10 I wasn't so worried about it but after a rainy night at camp I woke up to a rusty knife. As long as you keep an eye on it though, it should be fine. Very ergonomic. Most comfortable folder I own. BUY IT BEFORE THE PRICE RISES ANY MORE!

Not only is this my smallest knife or currently used as my edc rotation, it's also specially designed for a special someone. Knife designer-Alexandru Dionescue's son; the only knife of its size with a fat blade. I have a feeling the fat blade was to satisfy his son.

Center balanced, unique look, G10 scales, tapered handle grip, a choil that acts as a finger gaurd, VG-10 steel, compression lock, strong clip, and a knife that's "not so big & not so small". Alexandru Dionescue's knowledge with knives clearly shows in this design that was meant for his young son. That said, it's very comfortable to use for light cutting chores around the house.

Other similar spyderco options of its size but with different components: Sage, Manix, Caly, and Yojimbo

VG-10 steel. G-10 scales. Best pocket clip on the market. Huge-bellied blade. Under 3oz. Compression lock. Perfect gimping. Full flat ground. Opens smoother than butter on a hot knife, yet retains a strong detent while closed.

The deep choil on the handle is what separates this knife from the rest of the market. Since the blade pivots on a pin forward the choil, there is zero strength loss from the choil despite its benefits. As an experienced knife collector and user, I cannot make a recommendation for improvement other than the font that Alexandru used for his Dialex logo and a price point around 80.00. However I was glad to pay what I did.

Lets see. Open boxes, cut line, spread peanut butter, process food, feather wood, etc. I'm not a big fan of overpaying for a blade due to names and such, but in this case Alexandru and Spyderco came together in a rare symbiosis to create the best 3oz I have ever put in my pocket. I'm dying to see what else Alex has to offer.

Pros: This knife is somewhat compact in relation to my other full size knives; it's very thin, very light weight, has G10 scales, has a wide blade made of excellent steel (VG10), and the design of the handle provides an exceptionally secure grip.
Cons: It's not an assisted opening knife, the pocket clip is less than perfect as it leaves about 1/2 of an inch or less of the knife sticking out above the top of the pocket when carried using the pocket clip, and it's not made in the U.S.; it's made in Japan. But, hey, so is my Toyota and it has served me faithfully with no problems since October 2005 when I purchased it!
Still, this is one of my favorite knives and I would highly recommend it.
