Just lives up to my expectations, January 6, 2011
This review is from: Spyderco Phoenix Micarta Plain Edge Knife, White (Sports)
I'll get it out of the way right now... this is a great knife; well worth the price. I have a few reservations; I have about a dozen or more folders, mostly Benchmade, but I also have an original Buck Mayo which is at about the same price point as this knife.
First, the action is very smooth and the lockup is extremely solid.
I've carried it every day for a month now, and these are my impessions.
The action is really interesting, maybe even unique; instead of the blade spine bumping up against a stop pin like every other knife I have, this knife has the back of the spine formed into a ramp, which locates against an opposite ramp machined into the inside of the back spine... awesome!! The lockup is extremely tight; it feels like a fixed blade.
When the blade is open, the whole knife kind of curves down, which is unusual. There is also a well placed choil at the back of the blade and the over all feel is extremely ergonomic. I will say that this is one of the most ergonomic knives I've handled.
My reservations; compared to the Buck Mayo which is about the same price:
1. The finish on the blade has obvious tool marks.
2. The cutting edge of the blade only measures about 2.5 inches, whereas all of my other knives that are the same size when closed, have a full 3 inch cutting edge. So in other words, this is a pretty big knife that has a surprisingly short cutting edge.
3. I have several knives at this price point, and they all happen to have blades made out of S30V steel, while this knife's blade is made of VG-10. VG-10 is a very good steel, but at this price point I expect something better than Spyderco's "standard" steel.
4. Overall, the fit and finish is not quite as good as other knives I have at this price.
5. Like other reviewers have said, the inside edges of knife sides are almost sharp... enough so to be uncomfortable. I have filed mine down.
6. The blade was not all that sharp out of the box. I mention it because I've seen a lot of people comment about how crazy sharp their Spyderco knives are when they receive them.
I guess that sounds like a lot of faults, but over all, I love this knife and I think that it is well worth the price. It's just that at this price, I think it is valid to point out where the product does not meet expectations.

SWEEEEEEEET!, October 21, 2010
This review is from: Spyderco Phoenix Micarta Plain Edge Knife, White (Sports)
Here is another VG-10 stainless Japanese made Spyderco with the ball-bearing lock mechanism. The handle is made of a white resin laminate called Micarta that's attractive, but some might find it too smooth. It has a titanium handle and has a striking appearance for the blade size. The knife is really built for the hand so the blade can perform its work. If that wasn't enough, it's a Howard Veile design, with his signature icon and name opposite the spyderco spider. This knife has been discontinued by Spyderco and soon will not be available anywhere. A warning; when closing this knife one handed, if you have small hands, the blade goes right to the end and if you push hard enough, the flesh of your palm under your little finger and above your wrist might get a small cut. That happened to me, but I loved the knife so much, I decided to stick with it and even give it 5 stars! Get 'em before they're gone!

Excelent knife, August 24, 2010
This review is from: Spyderco Phoenix Micarta Plain Edge Knife, White (Sports)
It's expensive but it's worth it. I carry it every day and it's the best knife I have ever owned.
Ive had this knife for eight months now I use it a lot and haven't had to sharpen it. Its tough too, i left it in my jeans and washed and dried it. It stayed clipped to my jeans pocket the whole time and took no damage.
