5.0 out of 5 stars Salt 1, perfect EDC, October 8, 2010

This review is from: Spyderco Salt I Plain Edge Yellow H-1 Steel Knife (Sports)
I bought my Salt 1 almost 2 months ago and have carried it exclusively apart from all my other knives. Its the perfect size for every day carry, it will never rust, it's affordable, solid lock up, comes sharp and holds an edge well. I love the yellow handle, love the sabre grind, it has a larger deployment hole than any of my other Spydercos which is great.

I honestly do not think i would change anything on this knife. Quit reading my review and go buy one!!

I have used this knife while sea kayaking and rolling in brackish water on the Potomac. Although I have seen some reddish stains indicating the beginning of rust, I haven't seen any real rust yet. The knife is very sharp and the color will help in finding it if you drop it, but I always use a lanyard-which is easy to tie in the thumb hole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Spyderco knife, May 24, 2011

-Everything about the knife seems high quality
-H1 steel will not rust
-Yellow makes the knife easy to spot, for example, if you drop it underwater
-lightweight, 1/2 the weight of the Tenacious
-good amount of actuation force to open it so that it will not accidentally come open

4.0 out of 5 stars Takes to water like a yellow duckling, January 13, 2012

I'll compare it to the Delica 4 (sabre ground version), which it's very close to in size/price...

Where H1 is better:

- Rust proof...really can't overstate the importance of this when it's needed
- Yellow? The visibility could come in handy
- The thumb hole is a touch larger on the H1, and the jimping goes a couple notches higher

Where the H1 is worse:

- The clip on the H1 is a bit long, relative to the handle, so I find the inside of my pointer finger pressing against it, which causes it to slide across the handle slightly (enough to notice with a firm grip)...this is my biggest gripe. Also, the clip only has 2 positions (both tip up, which I prefer anyways), whereas the D4 has all 4.
- The waffle pattern on the H1 isn't as good as the volcano grip on the D4
- The handle isn't as comfortable as the D4, but it's still good
- The H1's tip is pointed rather downward, so it won't pierce as well as the D4. There may be some advantage to the downward facing tip (slightly less curvature, so maybe easier to chop with/sharpen?), but I don't see it.

Where the H1 is different (or worse, but for a good reason)

- The lack of metal liners (done for obvious reasons) makes the knife more front heavy
- Supposidly H1 edge retention improves after a few sharpenings, at which point it's comparable to VG-1

Overall, it's definitely worth having, but I would've liked to see the D4 improvements (except for liners) implemented here.

I like the rust proof steel and the light weight. The plain edge needs resharpened some but it does resharpen easy.Ihave a Pacific Salt too in black w/ serrated edge. Its alot bigger than the Salt1. This Salt1 is the better EDC.

Ever since I lost my last one at the beach, I have gone through a parade of other knives and tools. I finally relented and picked up another spyderco, without regret. This time in yellow so hopefully I can find it when I drop it again.

It is with me constantly, whether at the office, in the boat, or at the beach. Never a drop of oil needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Looking knife., September 12, 2011

This knife looks great, performs great, and does not rust. Sharp out of the box but a few swipes on the stone makes it even sharper. My knife of choice for EDC and my spyderco of choice regardless of the other metals the more expensive ones are made of. Top me this knife is what spyderco is all about. Has flair and does not look aggressive. its very very light but solid. If you want a spyderco you will be picking up all the time just to look at and use Get this one. Perfect knife and great start to a spyderco collection, but this might be the only spyderco you will ever buy because it has it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome knife, July 13, 2011

This is my 3rd Spyderco and my favorite so far. It's the perfect size and weight for EDC (I can't even feel it when it's in my pocket). I just tested it out wearing it two straight days going swimming in a river and not a spot of rust was on it. I used it to make some spears for s'mores and it did pretty good considering its size and weight. Definately not a hard use outdoor knife but it will get the job done. I've used it in the kitchen as well and all I have to do is rinse it off and stick it back in my pocket without worrying about drying it 100%.

This is definately a must have for anyone who carries knives, even if it's not for EDC.
