It's thin which makes it great for everyday carry.

The long handle gives you substantial reach in a tactical situation, especially if you back up on the nice G10 handle.

This is an awsome knife! I truely like everything about it and have found nothing bad to say about it. This is my third spyderco Police model. The first two had the stainless handles and were serrated (spyder-edge). I like this one even better!
First of all, The only way to get my spyder-edge knives truely resharpened was to send it back to spyderco and do without it for 6 weeks or so. This knife is plain edged and I AM able to sharpen it! I am loving this! Spyderco's VG-10 steel rocks! It takes an edge well and holds the edge wonderfuly! I use the spyderco sharpmaker first and then use, (and this is what really makes a difference), a leather strop with stropping compound. WOW what a difference! This knife came out of the box very sharp. I immediately stropped the edge and I am so satisfied with this steel!!!! I have many knives with many different steel compounds, none of which compares to this VG-10. Spyderco's S30V steel featured in many of thier new knives doesn't come close.
The next thing I really enjoy is the G-10 handles with the agressive texturing. I work in the Emergency Medical Field. Sometimes I am in a bloody environment. Blood makes everything slicker than eel snot! This handle stays securely in my hands and this is very important to me.
Blood is also very corrosive and this steel seems to be impervious to corrosion. Water, mild acids, nor blood has caused any rust or discoloration thus far.
The blade came very tight in the habdle with no play (sise to side or front to back). After hard use, this is still the case.
These handles are stainless steel lined for extra strength. The liners are skeletonized to reduce weight.
There is gimping in the spine as well as the belly for extra support and grip.
The overall knife is balenced well and ergonomic.

On my other reviews, I constantly talk about knives from a defensive/tactical line as the priority and then everything else as a plus afterwards. Since I live in an urban setting, fixed blades are out so large easily carried folders is what i look for. I do use a three knife EDC system and i do love to collect 'em. Buying good folders is my downfall.... So with that said, i bought this Police used lightly from an Ebay seller. The knife came with no marks, scratches, dings or dents. What a great buy!

One of my all time favorite knives is the Spyderco Endura that I bought in 1990. Still in good shape that knife is now retired. I replaced it with a gen 4 endura and im still as happy as ever. When i originally looked at the Police, I really wanted it but the cost (im retired)put it out of my range. So from a distance i viewed the Police as an Endura on steroids....my kinda knife. When it popped up on ebay at a very low price..."it was on" I have not been disappointed. It is a well made larger folder that is built to last. It sits well in the pocket and its slim & thin profile does not bother me when carried throughout the day. The handle is very long (i have large hands) so it might be a too large for small to medium sized hands. If you fall into that category, visit a knife store so that you can see ifthis is the right knife for you. The G10 handles are grippy enough and the jimping is good enough so that this would be a decent knife for defensive puposes especially with the approximately 4 1/4" blade. It is as they say...a beast of a knife.

Now the downside, the blade is long and with a lockback system is slow to deloy without using some force and momentum to get that 4'+ blade moving.

I use this on the job as a Police Officer and it is outstanding. The blade came with a razor's edge and it has not diminished even after heavy use. I would highly recommend this knife if you need a utility tool as well as a potential secondary weapon.

So anyway I was tweaking the pinion screw trying to get this to open as smooth as silk when I loosened just a bit too much.
The blade dropped and just barely hit my finger, leaving a nice deep 3/8" long gash in the crease of my knuckle. TALK ABOUT SHARP! I didn't even feel it.

P.S. G-10 scales aren't nearly as slippery as stainless steel, and for the 30 extra bucks I am glad to have them.

My main complaint about the Police 3 are the ergos, specifically the place where your pinkie sits on the handle. If you look at the picture, you can see the big finger choil on the front, the next 'choil' where the middle and third finger reside, and then the rear of the knife's handle is considerably fatter than the rest, and yet your pinkie finger is of course the shortest of your fingers. So, basically this knife almost feels like a 3 finger mini-knife because I really couldn't get my pinkie in a comfortable position; it almost always falls directly on the point dividing the second choil and the rear of the handle. I'm guessing this is a compromise for putting a finger choil on the blade itself.

Besides that, the Police 3 is what it is: a very long 'defensive' knife. Now, you have to consider that the Police originally came out in the early 1980's, so it in a way is the original 'defensive' folding knife. However, over the intervening years just about everybody and their mother hopped on the 'tactical' train and milked it dry. This produced some gimmickry but also some good ideas. What I'm getting at is that I think the Police has been superseded in terms of value, primarily by Cold Steel, specifically their 'Hold Out' knife. For 30 dollars you can get a fully serrated Hold Out 2 that has a .25 inch shorter blade. If I was a cop I would get that knife. The Hold Out's steel is 'inferior' but it has better ergonomics, G-10, a blade better suited for stabbing, which the Police 3 isn't really intended to do, a stronger lock, its an ounce lighter and its 100 dollars cheaper. BTW, I'm not a Cold Steel shill, the Hold Out is my only knife from CS. But besides Cold Steel and Benchmade there really isn't much that can be trusted.
