Product Description

Being tenacious means one holds fast. One is persistent and cohesive. It means being tough and tireless until achieving your goal: all knife-worthy definitions for a worthy knife. The mid-sized Tenacious has a black G-10 laminate handle, milled with prolonged fatigue-free cutting in mind. Tucked inside are skeletonized steel liners increasing the handle’s rigidity and strength without adding non-functioning weight or bulky thickness. The 8Cr13Mov stainless blade is leaf-shaped and ground flat from spine to cutting edge for cutting performance. The blade’s shape coupled with an oversized Spyderco Round Hole and textured spine jimping allow you to open the blade and position your thumb on the spine in slip-proof confidence ready for work. A Walker Linerlock (with jimped liner) and a 4-way pocket clip lets you set your carry and draw preference: Tip-up/tip-down left-hand/right-hand. Screw together construction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value every day carry knife, March 27, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Spyderco Tenacious G-10 Handle Folding Combo Edge Knife C122GPS (Sports)
The Tenacious is well-reviewed all over the Internet. It's a superior value knife--you get superb screw-construction, steel-lined, grippy G-10 handle, good blade steel, one-hand opening, great pocket clip, large opening Spyder hole, great ergonomic handle shape and thumb ramp jimping.

Combo edge arrived very sharp (the plain edge portion perhaps not at legendary Spyderco sharpness), but was evenly ground at approx 30 degree inclusive. The Spyderedge serrations are excellent.

Fits well clipped to jeans pocket. The closed length is just right--any longer and it might become uncomfortable when seated. When clipped with tip-down, the visible part of the knife is pretty significant, with about an inch of handle width and thumb ramp portion of blade showing. Switching to tip-up clip configuration would reduce that if that's a concern for you.

Highly recommended. And will likely buy another for backup and edge variety.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent knife,,,,Fantastic when price is considered, December 5, 2010

This review is from: Spyderco Tenacious G-10 Handle Folding Combo Edge Knife C122GPS (Sports)
I originally purchased this knife 2 years ago and after only a month I gave it to a co-worker who was carrying a monumental piece of junk and could not afford any better. I had every intention of purchasing another but only recently replaced it. I have been carrying this knife again for the past few weeks and I refuse to part from this one. It is light weight, tight fitting, slim, sharp, and the blade deploys as fast as an open assisted knife. The ability to position the pocket clip in all four positions just add to the versatility of this knife. Too many lock back knives come the the pocket clip set to carry tip down and no way to change position. I prefer tip up so I can add a hangman noose lanyard to the knife making it easy to pull out of my pocket while sitting. The liner lock snaps into position very tight when the blade is opened, and there is no wiggle in the blade at all. gimping on the spine along with the rise in the back of the blade allow your thumb to stay in position while performing heavy cutting jobs. The overall fit and finish are excellent, exceptional when price is considered. I have paid $100 for knives that were simply not as well made as this one. A higher end blade steel would be nice but the 8cr13MoV used in this knife is very adequate and holds an edge well even after a day of heavy use. I prefer combo edge blades in my EDC lock back knives but I also have the plane blade version of this knife. I have a choice of several Kershaw, Buck, ZT, Benchmade, and SOG knives but find myself choosing this one over the others more times than not.I now have several of these knives. The price allows you to have several, I now have one in the car, one in my bug out bag and one plain blade and one combo blade on my bedside table for daily carry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Super Buy, September 2, 2011

This review is from: Spyderco Tenacious G-10 Handle Folding Combo Edge Knife C122GPS (Sports)
Although I've been collecting knives for a few years and carrying a pocket knife for more than 50, this is my first Spyderco.

I originally posted this review in September 2011 but, after more than two months, much of what I felt about the Tenacious has changed and I've made some extensive edits.

What hasn't changed is my being bothered by the fact that this model is made in China. I'm not a fanatic about buying only products made in the U.S., but tend to stay away from much of what is made in China. Anyway, nobody put a gun to my head to buy this knife and I have to admit that the quality is quite good for the price. Spyderco seems to be doing a first class job of overseeing their Chinese source, which is more than I can say for some other brands.

One thing that did change was my concern about the "hole". The Tenacious is the only knife that I own that uses this opening method. It took me a little while, but I've become very comfortable with it. I may be the only person who doesn't use his thumb to open the knife. I find it easier and faster to use my index finger to "flip" the blade open. A classic case of doing what works. I did loosen the pivot bolt about ½ turn and now the blade just flies open with a flick of my finger. No problem with accidental opening whatsoever and closing is a one-hand operation as well.

The blade steel is 8Cr13Mov which I've come to feel is of mid-level quality. It takes a nice edge but doesn't hold it nearly as long as something like ZDP189. Given the price point, I have no complaints.

The G10 scales are grippy and I like the pocket clip. I wish that more manufacturers would design knives that allow for four-way clip positioning, but not many knives are designed to handle that.

At some 4 ounces, this knife feels heavier than it looks and you really know that it's in your pocket. The blade is quite thick and the serrations are extremely sharp. Oddly, I didn't find the plain portion of the edge to be as sharp as expected from Spyderco. Although I wasn't sure that I would like the combo blade, it turns out that I do. Cutting heavy rope and plastic ties is a breeze with the serrated portion.

Made in China or not, the knife exudes quality. Even the packaging was better than expected. I initially had some doubts about keeping the Tenacious. However, after 2+ months of use, there is no way that I'm going to sell it.

It's now nearing the end of December and I'm making one more edit....

I like this knife so much that I'm giving one as a Christmas gift.

Call me crazy, but I've been working on polishing the blade on mine to a mirror-like finish with 3M micron paper. It's a long process to do by hand but I've been doing it a little at a time. Probably silly to waste time on this with a $30 knife that will actually be used, but it looks quite a bit different from the stock finish.
