A great knife!,

Living on a ranch I need a knife which will clip on my pocket, easy open and a sharp serrated blade. The main use is cutting the baling twine on my hay bales, other uses as you would expect for a knife. The design and workmanship is exceptional.

I should mention that I've owned serrated edge knives before from major production knife makers, but this is my first Spyderco. I can say that beyond all shadow of a doubt, I am exceedingly impressed with the factory edge that comes on this.
This knife exceeds all expectations. I own knives by Microtech, Kershaw, Benchmade, Boker, and CRKT and several other makers. None of them has been such aggressive out of box cutter as this. I've been carrying this as part of my every day carry pretty much exclusively since I opened the box. The size and weight are perfect for me personally. Not so large as to get in my way, but large enough for pretty much any task I throw at it. The serrated edge retains it's edge extremely well. As far as the resharpening the blade, this hasn't been a factor as of yet, after several months, and hundreds of boxes it still retains an excellent edge. I have one quibble with this knife; the blade has no choil at it base. For a while, I was consistently cutting my thumb when closing it. The choil is the area where the blade meets the knife. With this blade the edge goes all the way to where the blade meets the handle. On most folders, the edge ends three or four millimeters shy, and there is an unsharpened portion at the base of the blade. After a month of cuts, I learned to be a bit more wary when closing it (the previous review that asked if it was possible for a blade to be too sharp comes to mind; this thing cuts enything it comes into contact effortlessly, unfortunately this sometimes also includes my thumb). That quibble aside, at this price point and quality the knife is unmatched, just be prepared to carry a knife that cuts like nothing you've owned before if you haven't owned a Spyderco. I should also mention that the photograph isn't terribly good. The blade looks black in the photograph, but in reality has a satin finish. I find this preferable, as a black coating would chip or wear off under the normal daily use I put this through.

This knife is very well made, and looks like a much more expensive knife (parts, blade, finish and markings are higher-end quality - and you must see to appreciate). The fully serrated blade will be a great all purpose user and would also do as a very imposing self-defender (if needed). And, it's extremely sharp (as mentioned in other reviews). I can add, that tried to cut some 65 lb braided fishing line, and broke the cardinal rule of using any knife, I cut the line pulling toward me. When I did, it certainly cut the line, and also went about 1/4 thru my opposite hand thumb (which I was splicing braided line to mono). And, this did so with light cutting pressure. *************This knife is a circular saw.. So, for use as a workman's knife, you should attach a small and secure lanyard utilizing the lanyard hole, to wrap around your pinky if you plan on doing lots of sawing, or stab puncturing boxes etc. If one were not careful with this knife, a sweaty hand could slip forward whilst sawing something, and... off goes a few of your fingers.. Or, if you punched into a box, or bag of fertilizer and hit something hard, one could picture your thrust hand slipping forward onto the blade of knife. This thing will easily go right through your hands/fingers like butter and I cannot imagine what wood-sawing force and a slip would do (OMG). Hence, the serrations on this knife are not really all that handle or choil protected from your fingers (if your hand were to slip forward). So, I would NOT use this knife as your average folding pocket knife, or kitchen knife. Hence, it will cut things that you normally wouldn't try and cut. Sypderco did a great job with the serrations here, but a fool will really hurt himself playing around with this knife. I have to wonder if this knife is really for show and to defend your life, moreso, than it is for someone who uses a knife a lot.. If they do, they should heed a special warning (tie a pinky lanyard with paracord, and/or wear some good chain-saw gloves for lots of use.
So, again, this fully serrated Spyderco is super sharp, and sharper than I thought, and must be respected, and maybe moreso than other knives. I also bought a Gerber, Firestorm, which I do like a lot. It too is extremely sharp, and this Syperco knife was nearly 1/2 the price. Therefore, if you want an inexpensive, and high quality knife, look no further. An exceptional knife, and great looking too for the price. This is no Cubscout, or Boyscout knife. Enjoy - (with caution)

This is my latest addition to my collection, and I am quite pleased with Spyderco's level of quality. And let me tell you, this blade is beyond sharp! You will not regret this purchase. It combines an excellent blade with a more easily operated liner-lock, instead of the usual lock-back. Made in China, but the quality did not appear to suffer for it. Pocket clip can be located by the operator for left or right, blade up or down. Just don't try to order the one with the black blade...

I have several high quality hunting knives, they are all fairly expensive. I have been carrying less expensive knives for daily utility use, and for work around our hunting lease - it's no loss if these knives are lost or damaged. Spyderco's solid reputation convinced me to buy this less expensive knife, but my expectations were modest at best. After using this knife, I can not be more pleased with its quality. This knife is extremely sharp, well made, lightweight, and low cost - a perfect choice for daily use. I will be ordering another for my son to use during hunting trips.

Have had this for a week now. I was carrying a straight blade crkt. these serations are much more effective for working, cutting rope, boxes, tiewraps etc. i like how light it is and the g10 scales are just the right amount of texture not to mess up my pants. slides easy in and out of the pocket for 1 handed operation. overall a great deal for the money

Good sharp knife for the price. It opens smoothly with a satisfying snap and is comfortable however I hold it. It's difficult to close left-handed, but that's not a major problem. I carry this knife everywhere it's legal to do so.
Note that is knife is extremely sharp. I've cut my hands several times already just opening and closing it; it barely needs any pressure to start going into skin.

I bought this knife to use at my job which involves a LOT of cutting up cardboard. Knowing what that does to a straight edge blade (and seeing what it did to my Benchmade Auto <--- bad idea) I decided to get this knife based my experience with my old Delica, Endura and Civilian years ago. This knife works VERY WELL for what I need it for. It goes everywhere with me and has yet to let me down. While cutting cardboard will dull a straight edge knife quicker than a tween screaming at a Justin Bieber concert, it has yet to affect this one with the total serrated edge. And yes it has cut me once or twice when I wasn't handling with the proper amount of respect that you should handle all edged weapons with. Regardless of that, it was a helluva good buy so much that my $150 Benchmade Mini-Reflex Auto is sitting in my drawer and hasn't seen the light of day for quite some time. Granted its a GREAT knife too, but the Spyderco has been perfect (not to mention a tad more legal in the touchy state I live it. Autos are "frowned upon" here). It has also weathered two camping/hiking trips with nary a problem. Hope to use it for a loooong time. Hope this helps.

I bought this knife to replace a pocket knife I lost which used to fit unobtrusively in the change pocket of my jeans. I didn't think the extra length (4-3/8" closed) would be a problem but I didn't realize that due to the large blade this knife is a whopping 1-9/16" wide when closed. It seems like a well made solid knife. The opening tension and locking mechanism is excellent. I also nicked my finger opening it one handed the first time. (Sticking the side of my thumb in the thumb hole and keeping my fingers clear works well). It appears to be a very well made, sharp knife. But open, it looks like it could skin and dress a deer with no problem. It reminded me of the scene in Crocodile Dundee when he whips out his Australian Bowie and says "Now this is a knife". I feel like I would need to be discreet using it in public.
Update Feb. 7, 2011 ... after 6 weeks ... I originally rated this knife 4 stars which I now raise to 5 stars. I carry this knife clipped inside my pocket so only the clip and a bit of the top shows. This knife is as sharp and looks as pristine as the day I got it. No loose screws or signs of wear on the handle or blade or dulling of the blade like I would have expected. I spent twice as much on a Bench made knife and experienced all that. This is now the best pocket knife I have owned.

As others have said, this is a very sharp knife. I've done the light touch thing on the edge that every one does to feel how sharp it is and found myself seeping a minute later, not thinking I had broken the skin.
This knife has a nice weight to it and feels good in the hand. I'm very pleased with the knife in general. Why'd I knock a star off the review? when it showed up, I know this is going to sound dumb, it smelled cheap. The lubricant is that kind you smell on the 4 dollar pocket knifes you find in gas stations at at bad tables at gun shows... Made in china.. bleh Other than that, I can't really fault the knife. I still have yet to fully break it in, but for the money it's a really nice knife. |
