5.0 out of 5 stars More challenging than one would think
I was a little surprised by the earlier negative review based on how easy this game was. The thing I found best about it was that the difficulty is completely variable. Each world/level has many optional tasks that you can choose to perform or to skip. I can see that you could hurry through by doing just the minimum for each level but where's the fun in that? 3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Sequel to the Original
Spyro was the best game we have bought for the Playstation and we were looking forward to this sequel. We we greatly disappointed.

Spyro 2 introduces new moves, worlds and characters but sacrificies the adventure. The worlds are to small and busy. There are also way to many animated "movie clips." They really break the action. Also the animation is...

It is a marvellous antedote for the rest of the tacky, poorly conceived games that I have rented for my 7 year old daughter and is the ONLY one I have had any interest in playing myself. This one is definately on the Christmas list

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection! (again!), January 14, 2000

This review is from: Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage (Video Game)
The original Spyro was a masterpiece, and I count it as the sole reason that (at 28 years old) I still play video games. The beautifully rendered worlds, the humorous animations, and the attention to details really create a sense of being in a vast, magical world. I didn't think they could possibly improve on the original. But they did.

Spyro 2 manages to maintain everything that made the original a classic, and goes on to add much, much more to do. You play hockey, you defend villagers from giant ravenous lizards, you play hide-and-seek with a giant, you fight enormous monsters in lava-filled arenas, you play billiards with turtles (you have to see it to understand!), you dogfight versus sheep in flying saucers, and these are just a few of the side quests - I think there are 64 in all. Then there are loads of secret "skill points" throughout the worlds (and a really cute reward for finding all of them.) Overall, Spyro 2 is a beautiful addition to a flawless original game. The sequel adds even more humor, and manages to do it in a way that appeals to adults and children at the same time for different reasons (in much the same way as the old Warner Bros. cartoons.)

If anyone needs further proof of this game's appeal to a broad age spectrum, you should know that my mother absolutely loves it. She had never played a video game before the original Spyro, but when she tried it she was hooked. She bought Spyro 2 the day it came out, and has called me at all hours of the day and night asking for hints. She just got to 93% completion yesterday, and now she's trying to find all the secret skill points. I'm just glad that she now shares my point of view: video games aren't all mindless, repetitive drivel. Some of them have real class.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great family game, November 28, 1999

I purchased Spyro last year and all the kids in my family loved it. The adults played it almost as much because of easy game play, good characters and simply, alot of fun. Spyro 2 is at least as good as Spyro. The new moves, challanges and characters are great fun. The game was a big hit over Thanksgiving weekend and kept kids of all ages amused and entertained for hours. There is nothing in the game that is offensive and it is ofter quite funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Fun Gameplay, November 2, 2002

I really enjoyed the first Spryo because of the fun and imaginative gameplay that involved fanciful levels and a loveable cast of characters. The first time I played Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, I was amazed at how much the graphics had improved. If you loved the scenery in Spyro, you'll love the beautiful levels in Spyro 2. In this game, you have several new challenges and abilities. In Spyro 2, you get to swim underwater, which really adds something to the gameplay. Another addition is the orb, which Spyro can get for completing challenges. Although the challenges are sometimes tedious, this is also an interesting addition because it allows you to test your abilities. Spyro 2 expands on the fun and creativity of the first Spyro, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves fun, fantastical gameplay and especially to those who enjoyed the first Spyro.

Spyro 2 is great except for one thing: it's too short. Spyro 1 kept my son and me entertained for weeks! Spyro 2 will be completed (via rental) before I even get a chance to buy him a copy for Christmas!

The new moves are cool. Hope they continue with the excellent graphics and come out with aother Spyro in the near future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fan-freaking-tastic!, January 11, 2000

I've only been a Playstation owner for a little over a year. The first game we bought was Spyro the Dragon, back in late 1998. What a perfect example of what the Playstation is capable of. I still play Spyro 1, even after beating it a few times.

Now comes along Spyro 2, and they actually DID manage to top the original. The graphics are absolutely breathtaking, the new puzzles are (and I hate to use such a hackneyed phrase as this, but it fits) fiendishly clever. And Stewart Copeland has outdone himself, creating a score that blends seamlessly into the game, creating a totally enthralling *experience*.

Game play itself is pretty much the same, with a few new moves to learn, but the same precise control. There's more interaction with characters in the game, and a storyline that's more involved than the previous outing. And the mini-games within the whole game will keep you coming back to have a little fun long after you've finished the game (which is quite involved, between the actual story line, the 100% complete, AND the skill points! This one will keep you busy for a while!).

All in all, I'm completely psyched. I can't wait for either: a) Spyro 3, or: b) Super-Happy-Fun-Spyro on the Playstation 2! (yeah! )

4.0 out of 5 stars No Dragons, Just Orbs, November 28, 1999

I was expecting another round of Dragon rescues, but was pleasantly surprised. Some of the orbs are really hard to find, and Hunter can be difficult to beat. Overall it's fun and the graphics are just as great as the first Spyro. Ripto and his goons are toungher than Gnasty Gnorc ever thought about being! In Autumn Plains, look for cracks in the walls (that's the only hint you're getting)! The only thing that kept me from rating it 5 stars is the ending ... what a bummer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the original, and genuinely fun for all ages., July 3, 2002
This review is from: Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage (Video Game)
As much as I loved the original Spyro -- the sequel blows it away.

Everything that I liked best about the original -- the interactivity, the detailed and sophisticated environments and fun stuff like blowing things away with cannons -- is back and cranked up several notches.

Everything that made the original game sometimes seem repetitive -- doing nothing but collecting gems and dragons, the tiny worlds, only being able to use a few moves in any given environment -- is dumped.

And while this game really is perfect for kids -- the worst thing in it is some cartoon violence of dinosaurs swallowing cavemen and spitting out an enormous bone -- it's a hoot for adults, with lots of subtle humor and a game that's challenging enough without having anything as frustrating as Tree Tops from the original game.

An instant classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best platform game for the PS1?, December 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage (Video Game)
Spyro 2 is an excellent game. It has everything that makes platform games fun: bright, colorful characters, excellent graphics, excellent gameplay, good variety of gameplay and sheer fun factor. While playing Spyro 2, I realized that I was playing one of the most enjoyable platform games that I'd put inside a console system. Sure, the game is really cutesy looking with all kind of kiddie cartoon graphics, but don't be fooled. Spyro 2 is enjoyable enough to keep even fans of Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy entertained. Also, it doesn't simply cater to the male dominated game audience. It's an enjoyable game for both guys and girls.

I was engrossed in the game for months. It's not a difficult game at all, but it took me a while to beat as I'm not quite a game expert. Each of the game's levels (in three different worlds) is challenging in its own way. There are many tasks to perform and puzzles to solve. You can speed through the game quickly, or you can take your time and try to collect all the orbs in the game (I think there are 64 total). Getting to the end isn't very difficult at all, but completing the game 100% is a bit more challenging. This adds a substansial replay factor to the game. You can go back and play the levels over and over attempting to collect everyting. It took me a long time to get all the gems and orbs in the game. The game isn't particularly long, but it sure is fun.

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage is definitely worth buying for anyone who likes platform games or just really, really fun games. Since it's now available as a Greatest Hits title, it's more affordable than ever. If you have a Playstation, or a Playstation 2, get this game!
