It takes no more than 12 seconds for the first musical strains of 633 Squadron to blow the cobwebs off your ears. This amazing main title theme, hackneyed though it is by its constant overexposure and use in numerous commercials etc, still manages to tingle the spine with is aggressive simplicity. Written by a genial englishman Ron Goodwin, it rocketed him to a kind of musical plateau where everything was World War II and heroes needed a barrage of musical support. The score in itself is at times pleasant ("Memories of Norway", "Love theme") and rumbunctious ("Murder mission). The love theme is played at its best in "The attack begins" as Grant leaves Hilde on the airfield as he goes on a mission that will eventually kill her brother.
The album is presented with finesse by FSM who include a detailed booklet which breaks down the album tracks into their film sequencing thus allowing the listener to program the score properly. A welcome bonus suite of missing cues is also included for the first time providing some exciting variations on the main theme.
633 Squadron is an enjoyable score and sits nicely alongside Goodwin's other war scores, "Where Eagles Dare, "Operation crossbow", "Battle of Britain" Etc . The second disc in this release contains the composer's score to the James Caan war feature "Submarine X-1". While the main theme is quite interesting the balance of the score seems uninspired and is not at all up to Goodwin's usual standard. The sad passing of this gentleman composer who left his mark in both feature films and in British light music in general has allowed a lot of his unrecorded material to be finally released. Like the heroic fliers he has composed for you should scramble to get this album
