Rare political comic book,
This review is from: Squadron Supreme: Hyperion Vs. Nighthawk (Paperback)
It's not perfect, but this book successfully raises awareness of the genocide in Sudan through the unlikely medium of superhero comics. Not only that, Guggenheim gives a very nuanced take on the crisis. Like most mass slaughters, it is one conducted right in front of ambivalent or disinterested publics. Governments, including the US, maneuver cynically while do-gooders are frequently misguided in their attempts to put things right. This is not an optimistic book by any means, but it's not a situation that causes much optimism. Not for people looking for a quiet distraction, but for those who like their fiction--graphic or otherwise--thought-provoking and challenging.

good read for anyone who's followed the SUPREME POWER/SQUADRON SUPREME. Even if you haven't followed that story line, this story is independent from other story arcs. FYI, Hyperion is Marvel's take on what superman would have been like if the government found and raised him & nighthawk is Marvel's take on batman if he was black and his parents were murdered by a racist. Great story line.

"The Human Hand has at least twenty-seven bones." You see Nighthawk with his fist up and Hyperion right in front of him, "Fourteen of those a phalanx bones, also known as "digital" bones because they make up the fingers or "digits" Flashback of Nighthawk training by punching a brick wall "those bones are porous, with tiny holes in them, But repeated trauma re-forms the bones, filling in the holes and making them more dense." " Making them less susceptible to fractures and as hard as Hammers" cut to Nighthawk pulling back for the punch and he thinks to himself "So here we Go." If you don't Know much about the "Supreme Power/ Squadron Supreme" Title think Marvel's take on the DC universe and this story is like Superman Vs Batman, you see the thoughts of both Charters points of view, this book makes Nighthawk look much more of a bad ass, the story is a little short but it's soild

i liked the story and i love the Supreme Power MAX stories and this one didnt dissappoint. i liked the story and the art was cool (although Hyperion was WAY more muscular here than in the other books) all around enjoyable.
And you get to learn about what's going on in other countries. Loved that part about story.

"Dark Knight Returns"...in Africa,
This review is from: Squadron Supreme: Hyperion Vs. Nighthawk (Paperback)
Nighthawk (think Batman without the cape) and Hyperion (Superman without a cape) duke it out in Darfur, Africa, in a fight straight out of Frank Miller's "Dark Knight Returns". Although I don't know who Nighthawk or Hyperion are, I picked this up because I'm a fan of Guggenheim's other Marvel work ("Blade," "Wolverine"). Can the two superheroes stop fighting each other long enough to stop the genocide taking place?
Maybe, but there's nothing here that makes me care about either of these heroes or about the crisis in Darfur. The storytelling has so many flashbacks and flashforwards that I was never sure where in the storyline a particular scene was occurring. The story itself is ultimately pointless--the crisis in Darfur can't be stopped with money, weapons, or superheroes, so it leaves the reader feeling frustrated and futile. |
