PreSchool-This superbly crafted concept book will quickly become a favorite. In lilting rhyme full of alliteration, Dotlich invites toddlers to examine familiar square things such as "a cold cube of ice/caramels and crackers,/a dishcloth, and dice!" The objects are photographed against brightly colored backgrounds and the layout is simple and attractive. The final double-page spread asks children to interact with the book by identifying square items amid a variety of differently shaped objects. This title meets the developmental and visual literacy needs of this age group. All toddlers should have the opportunity to snuggle up with their parents and hear this book along with its companion, What Is Round? (HarperFestival, 1999).

In this simple concept book in the Growing Tree series, a companion to What is Round? (1999), the subject is all things square. Various ordinary objects appear in full-color photographs: a biscuit, a basket, a cold cube of ice, a window, a waffle, a sugar cube. Children will readily identify the familiar objects, such as crackers, quilt blocks, buckles, boxes, a brownie, and a book. It's a clean-cut collection, as a square button boldly asserts itself amid an assortment of round ones, and a round doorknob on a house provides enough contrast to keep the composition engaging. A final spread presents squares of all kindstoys, mints, computer disks, a clock, a rubber stamp, a salt shaker--against a colorful painted background, enticing onlookers to point and identify.
