Product Description

Handcrafted Since 1971 | Lifetime Warranty | Latex Free MDF® has redesigned the Queen Square Hammer to make it even more effective for eliciting myotatic, plantar, and abdominal responses. First popularized and named at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases in Queen Square, London, this weighted, agile percussion device features a softer silicone bumper and blunted tip for patient comfort and ease of use for the healthcare professional. A removable grip and more flexible handle ensure increased percussion accuracy and effectiveness. The red handle tip can be used as a target for testing visual fields. Head: A new and softer silicone bumper encloses the chrome-plated brass disc and is precisely weighted to induce myotatic responses. Handle: Long and flexible nylon-plastic handle with tapered point is suited for eliciting plantar and abdominal responses. Grip: A removable grip offers increased control. Tip Cover: A bright red tip cover can be used for visual field tests.

I am a general internist with 15 years experience. I have owned many reflex hammers but this one is the best. My partners and residents always knock on my door so that they may borrow it. In fact, it was so popular that one day it disappeared. Hmm.
The only down-side is that a medical student once commented, after looking at it upended on my desk, that the hammer resembled her dog's penis.

This hammer is very well made. The quality of the rubber including the handle is very good. The weight is sufficient. Its not too light that it will make eliciting reflexes hard and not too heavy that you'll hurt yourself or the patient. Quality is very good. I'm impressed with the packaging when it came. The only problem that I see will be the length of the handle which makes it difficult to fit in an average medical bag or even someone's lab coat pocket.

I used to use a Taylor raflex hammer but the head was kind of hard and didn't bounce very good, also the handle is made of steel so it didn't have flexibility. Now that i have this hammer i wont ever use any other kind (maybe the Babiski) this has a great rubber head and a really flexible handle. the only thing that anyone could complain about this hammer is maybe the size, but still a great hammer.

The Queen's Square hammer is supposed long. It's traditionally worn by threading through two button holes in your lab coat.
If you don't want to do that and you want to carry it,buy a telescoping model (which this one is NOT) or buy a smaller one.
Most of the time the Babinski hammer is smaller than this one and may fit into your pocket. Babinski hammers are also lighter with a smaller head. In my hands nothing beats a Queen's Square hammer and the collapsing ones don't feel as solid, but you have to not mind the bulk of it. The rubber on the black head will tend to stain you white coats at the level of the button where you thread it.

This is made in china and not in USA as advertised in amazon, the quality and craftsmanship is not as good as it was in the picture.

Good build quality, rubber end is soft but heavy enough for eliciting a good reflex respose. The handle is mildly flexible, actually I would describe it as stiff as it does not or barely flexes when 'whipped' as to not make it very practical for achieving this technique for accelerated contact. Otherwise it is very nice and my chief attending 'stole it' to use in his office when I am there for clinic days.

This reflex hammer has a nice heavy head that screws onto the shaft. My guess is that its price makes it one of the best values. It carries nicely through the button holes of a white coat once you slip the grip off. It stows nicely in a laptop bag after unscrewing the head. The length enables one to elicit all upper extremity reflexes without the examiner having to reposition him or herself.
