Book Description

Postcard History July 15, 2000
Times Square, celebrated as the crossroads of the world, begins at 42nd Street, America‚’s main stem. Times Square has a rich history as the center of American popular culture, embracing music, theater, and hospitality. Forty-second Street, once the northern boundary of commercial New York, was transformed into a legendary focal point of the publishing, entertainment, and transportation industries following the expansion of Grand Central Terminal.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Would've Paid More for White Space & Color, January 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Times Square and 42nd Street in Vintage Postcards (Postcard History) (Paperback)
This is a thorough, fascinating and informative book. However, I have two major complaints:
1. The pictures are generally laid out two to a page. With the extensive text, the pages look crowded. A larger page size and wider border would've made the book easier to read.
2. All the postcards are pictured in black and white. Many of the postcards were originally in color and don't translate well into black and white; the pictures just don't look as sharp. It's disappointing to see photos of Times Square from its color-splashed neon heyday rendered in greyscale.

The topic and text deserve a better designed treatment.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a marvelous book!, January 3, 2001
This review is from: Times Square and 42nd Street in Vintage Postcards (Postcard History) (Paperback)
128 pages of vintage (and a few new) postcards, with well-written explanatory captions. All of New York's 42nd Street (from river to river), concentrating on the Times Square area.

A very depressing book, like those "Then and Now" photobooks. New York was such a beautiful city 100 years ago, and it is heartbreaking to see the grand hotels, magnificent mansions, quaint brownstones and restaurants lost forever.

Nicely priced--there is no reason not to snap this one up, and I do hope more are to follow in a series!
